Mackenzie Health Hemodialysis program at the Mackenzie Health Richmond Hill hospital, Oak Ridges Satellite Dialysis Site and Vaughan Satellite Dialysis site.

 

As a key member of the Mackenzie Health hemodialysis care team, the chiropodist will work on the hemodialysis unit(s) to provide preventative foot screening and active care of foot pathology to all chronic hemodialysis unit patients. The chiropody role is funded as part of a research study supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The goal of the study is to understand whether chiropody care on dialysis units reduces the risk of foot complications among people on chronic hemodialysis. As detailed below, the chiropodist will have clinical and education responsibilities but will NOT be responsible for any research data collection or any coordination of research activities.

 

 

Contribute to safe, quality care by:

Deliver patient care on the hemodialysis units of Mackenzie Health in accordance with all hospital policiesFull scope of practice according to the standards of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario Deliver preventative and active foot care aligned with chiropody training and practice guidelines of Diabetes Canada, Wounds Canada and the International Working Group on the Diabetic FootImplement and deliver periodic (every 6 weeks) foot screening for all chronic hemodialysis unit patientsProvide education to patients and their caregivers on foot healthProvide education to the interprofessional hemodialysis unit care team on preventative foot care and the treatment of foot complicationsMaintain accurate clinical care records of all patient encounters as per hospital policyWork with the interprofessional hemodialysis unit care team to standardize the care plan for patients identified with an active foot complication Recognize patients having conditions beyond their scope of practice and, in consultation with hemodialysis unit care team, implement an escalation of care plan including investigations, treatment and referral to other health care professionals (e.g. vascular surgery, infectious disease)

 

What must you have:

A graduate of a recognized Chiropody or Podiatric Medicine programCurrent registration in good standing with the College of Chiropodist of Ontario
