Childbirth Educator PD
Position Summary Provides for all aspects of prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum patient and family education. This encompasses, but is not limited to, education and support regarding labor, breastfeeding and infant care for childbearing clients. This may include one on one breastfeeding assessment, education and support to families, both on in- and outpatient basis. Primary Position Responsibilities 1. Provides for education and support of the childbearing family from the prenatal through the postpartum periods, which may also include providing for in and outpatient education, follow-up, and support of the breastfeeding family. 2. Participates in the development and/or revision of programs and educational materials, including new products. 3. Supports the department by teaching a variety of classes, participating in setting and achieving departmental goals. 4. Maintains current industry knowledge and Professional Development. Qualifications Minimum Education: Required: All hires after July 2012 are required to have a Bachelor's Degree in nursing OR if Associates Degree or Diploma, RN must provide proof of enrollment in a BSN program prior to hire, be continuously enrolled and complete within 5 years of hire date or internal RN promotion date. Minimum Years of Experience (Amount, Type and Variation): Required: Childbirth Educator: 1 year of relevant experience in the field, and basic knowledge of childbirth education curriculum requirements. Lactation Consultant Required: 1 year relevant experience in the field and group teaching experience. Basic knowledge of the lactation process and of the nursing process. Preferred: Childbirth Educator - 1 year of teaching experience in this setting preferred. Lactation Consultant - 1 year of teaching experience (one on one and group, ideally). One year of experience in working with in and/or outpatient breastfeeding mothers and families. License, Registry or Certification: Required: Current NJ RN licensure and American Heart Association CPR certification. Childbirth Educator - Nationally or internationally recognized certification in Childbirth Education. If not certified upon hire, must obtain within a year of hiring. Lactation Consultant - Nationally or internationally recognized certification in Lactation. If not certified upon hire, must obtain a minimum of a CLC within 18 months of hiring. To show evidence of progress toward IBCLC certification following CLC achievement, and obtain IBCLC within a reasonable timeframe. Preferred: Lactation Consultant - Evidence of CLC and/or IBCLC certification. Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities: Required: Excellent teaching and interpersonal skills, demonstrated competence in utilizing varied teaching modalities, and in using the nursing process in working with in- and outpatients and families. Knowledge of growth and development along the lifespan, with specific knowledge of the emotional and physical needs of the childbearing family spanning the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum timeframes. Preferred: Experience in the design, implementation, and evaluation of curricula and patient teaching materials helpful.
