Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan is seeking a Laboratory and Classroom Services Supervisor to support our lower-level laboratory courses. This position is onsite in Ann Arbor, MI, Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, to support our Chemistry laboratory course operations.

Responsibilities*Coordinate high-enrollment Chemistry courses by liaising with faculty to assess course needs, including procurement of supplies, equipment setup, and logistical supportCollaborate with the ChemStands team to ensure a safe and effective learning environment for students and instructors.Provide training on laboratory equipment upon the instructor's request and offer technical support to GSIs and students during lab sessions.Collaborate with the department's waste handlers to ensure proper management and disposal of laboratory waste.Participate in meaningful feedback discussions with faculty, lab instructors, and others to make necessary modifications to the delivery of classroom instruction.Oversee ChemStands' inventory, ordering, and routine operations; assist the manager in maintaining proper inventory levels.Supervise the Laboratory/Classroom coordinator, who coordinates the other atrium labs and 10-12 part-time student workers.Promote safe work habits from all lab participants (students, staff, etc.). Assist Environmental Health and Safety staff and course instructors with the safe clean-up and disposal of chemical spills in the labs.Respond to student injury/chemical exposures during lab times.Assist with preparing for departmental laboratory outreach programs throughout the year, examples include Science Olympiad, Michigan Math and Science Scholars, WISE/GISE, etc.Required Qualifications*Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related science field 3+ years in research and/or instructional laboratory setting, with some level of supervisory experience. Functional knowledge of various types of equipment, instruments, and techniques used in chemistry laboratory activities. Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff,  with a strong commitment to customer service. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks effectively.Extensive experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and comfortable with general office and data management tools.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities. Ability to work in a fast-paced and complex environment, both independently and as part of a team, is needed.Desired Qualifications*Previous experience working in an academic environment.Strong understanding of LSA and University policies and procedures.  Working knowledge of shared computing environments. Experience managing inventory and ordering.Modes of Work

Additional Information

The target salary range for this position is  $60,700 - $75,900. Please note a higher salary may be offered for highly qualified candidates.

This is a full-time position. This position is in-person.
