CSM’s faculty are highly- skilled and creative; they incorporate the latest teaching approaches and technology into their instructional delivery. Our faculty work closely with students inside and outside of the classroom and serve as advisors to student clubs and more.   Our faculty teach face-to-face, online, hybrid, and hy-flex classes always focusing on student engagement and critical thinking.

Faculty in the chemistry and science disciplines are highly engaged in promoting science education and careers and are actively involved in supporting the community environment. Faculty teaching the Scientific Reasoning courses will be an integral part of the success of CSM’s Early College Program contributing to the program community of practice.  CSM’s chemistry faculty have participated in many local and national conferences focused on science education and chemistry curriculum. Science faculty also work extensively with community partners to support science and research focused internship opportunities. Faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, analytical and hands-on approaches. Faculty serve on discipline work-groups in order to have consistent, effective, and current teaching; therefore, the faculty member must be able to work well with others and implement decisions made by the group.  Faculty work in the lab and must be aware of proper safety procedures and PPE.  Faculty must be able to collaborate with the laboratory staff (technicians and coordinators) to ensure that adequate supplies are available and handled appropriately.

Faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches.  

As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our chemistry faculty. This faculty position focuses on teaching of lecture and labs for chemistry, and a general education scientific reasoning lecture.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The successful faculty member will teach 15 credit hours per semester and 30 credit hours per academic year of day, evening, or weekend classes. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester.  Faculty may be assigned to teach on any campus or center where CSM offers classes; however, the primary locations for this position are our Leonardtown and Prince Frederick campuses. Faculty may also be assigned to teach science courses for the CSM Early College program. Students taking Early College classes are dually enrolled in their local high school while also completing courses at CSM towards a certificate or degree. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success.  At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, contributing to student learning outcomes assessment processes, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development through participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.  

DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:     
Teach 30 credits of courses per contract year in the chemistry and science disciplines with an emphasis on chemistry and scientific reasoning.Teach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online, or in an accelerated format.Design assignments that incorporate students’ program of study and connect to the chemistry discipline Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approachesMeet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college studentsIncorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning processDemonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writingDemonstrated ability to read and interpret informationDemonstrated ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goalsDemonstrated experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performanceExperience developing or using Open Education Resource (OER) materials as an instructional toolMaintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences and activitiesMastery of appropriate computer operation skillsOperate a motor vehicle for travel to other campuses 

Minimum Education and Training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED:
Master’s degree in chemistry or closely related field with 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry, required.One year of instructional experience at the post-secondary level, that includes teaching courses, conducting and managing learning experiences, evaluating student achievement, providing input into curriculum development, policy and procedure formulation, and evaluation of program effectiveness at the community college level, preferred.Two years of professional experience in chemistry or a closely related field, preferred. Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation.Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as Desire2Learn to support and facilitate instructional delivery.Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, hy-flex, and web-hybrid formats.
