Certified Genetic Counselor - Maternal Fetal Medicine - Full Time
POSITION SUMMARY Provides professional genetic counseling to perinatal patients with a known genetic background that poses a risk of hereditary disease or malformation to their unborn child or to obstetrical patients with a newly diagnosed condition or malformation that poses a risk to their unborn child. Coordinates communication between the patient and multidisciplinary team in the diagnosis and evaluation of genetic conditions. Focuses on those at risk for an unfavorable pregnancy outcome or who have had abnormal prenatal screening. ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Responsible for obtaining, analyzing, counseling, educating and following up on obstetrical patients at risk for genetic diseases or birth defects. 2. Obtains patient and family historical medical data and interprets data to assist in determining possible problem areas. 3. Assists patients in understanding genetic disease or the birth defects in order to provide professional counseling services. 4. Coordinates patient visits, monitors tests and results and reports results to referring physicians. 5. Updates medical records and keeps team members apprised of patient issues, problems, and status. 6. Monitors information resulting from laboratory tests/diagnostic studies and reviews for further evaluation to assure continuity of patient care and education of patient/family in nature of disease/problem. 7. Assesses patient for additional stressors as to make proper referral recommendations. 8. Functions as an active member of perinatal hospice program and perinatal bereavement team. 9. Identifies and effectively utilizes community resources that provide medical, educational, financial and psychosocial support and advocacy as indicated. 10. Maintains follow up on newborn outcomes, collects appropriate data, and updates medical files. 11. Other duties as assigned. Education: Master’s degree in Human Genetics, Genetic Counseling or a related field is required and accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Skills: Strong attention to detail, thorough, consistent, and accurate in data entry. Possess good verbal and writing skills for communication. Able to concentrate on task for long periods of time and work well under pressure. Demonstrate strong computer skills with spreadsheets and databases. Years of Experience: New Graduates encouraged to apply License: Ability to obtain and maintain licensure in genetic counseling by the Ohio State Medical Board is required. Valid Driver's License is required.
