The Calibration Engineer is responsible for developing and fine-tuning engine control parameters to meet performance, fuel economy, durability , and emissions targets. This role involves working with engine control units (ECUs), conducting testing, and analyzing data to ensure optimal engine operation under various conditions. Engine performance development and optimization for given set of boundary conditions . This includes e missions/performance targets, existing calibration/hardware status, and budget/timing all impact the final recipe . Key responsibilities + Calibration Development for engine performance maps + Air handling system responses, fuel delivery system responses, physical sensor calibration, virtual sensor calibration. + Optimizing of numerous control parameters to comply with emissions, mechanical limits, and power requirements. + Develop and optimize calibration maps and look up tables for fuel control, throttle response, and emissions systems. + Adjust calibrations for different operating conditions (cold start, altitude, load, etc.). + Writing and execute test programs to confirm and calibrate engine management systems . + Systematic calibration of ECU parameters through efficient and effective test programs for varying engine features such as DOE’s. + Test & Validate calibration strategies against regulatory and performance requirements. + Ensure document traceability from requirements through test cases. + Analyze test data using tools like MATLAB, INCA, or ETAS to identify trends and areas for improvement. + Troubleshoot engine performance issues using diagnostic tools and data logs. + Ensure calibrations meet emissions standards (e.g., EPA, CARB … ). + Support certification testing and documentation. + Work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and emissions specialists. + Participate in cross-functional teams to support system development programs. + Maintain calibration records and manage calibration schedules using asset management systems. + Develop and maintain calibration procedures and documentation. + Recommend improvements to calibration processes and equipment. + Maintain detailed records of calibration changes, test results, and validation reports. + Present findings and recommendations to engineering teams and management. + Managing the delivery of calibration sets to customer + Build and maintain the Cal Guide and Cal Procedure + Support the Cal Review and maintain the Cal Base What we’re looking for Required : + Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or related field) or equivalent technical experience. + Self-starter that can l ead projects with minimal oversight. + Knowledge of motors & drives, control system fundamentals, and wiring systems. + Knowledge of high temperature instrumentation for measuring flow, pressure, temperature, imbalance, rotor motion, and vibration. + Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers , and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety. + Familiarity with ECU software and CAN communication protocols. + Strong understanding of measurement principles, uncertainty analysis, and instrumentation. + Experience with calibration tools (e.g., ETAS INCA, ATI Vision). + Proficiency in using calibration tools, software, and databases. + Familiarity with calibration standards and regulatory requirements. + Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. + Knowledge of emissions regulations and testing procedures. Preferred : + Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 2+ years of experience in calibration. + Proficiency with CAN and support tools preferred + Proficiency in calibration methods and tools is preferred. + Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to coordinate testing . + U nderstanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to harsh applications, principal failure modes, means to mitigate these, and the methods for validation. + Broad background in engineering technical disciplines that include vibration, heat transfer, stress, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, controls, magnetics and EMI/EMC shielding. + Electronic understanding from a performance, hardware, and microprocessor software standpoint .
