POSITION SUMMARY:
The CAD/CAM Technician Co-Op will support the manufacturing and engineering teams by applying computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) skills to real-world projects. This role provides hands-on experience in the new product development process, CNC programming, process optimization, prototyping, and technical drawing. The Co-Op student will participate in a wide range of projects, including 3D modeling, tooling analysis, component packaging, CNC machining, and 3D printing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Create and modify CNC programs using CAM software such as Mastercam, Catia, or other 3D modeling tools.Develop machining strategies, tool paths, and assist with process optimization.Create Class-A CAD surfaces and digital upholstery patterns.Build 3D product assemblies and component packaging (rigging, electronics, live wells, lighting, etc.).Develop tooling models, including draft analysis, flange creation, and GD&T analysis.Generate 2D manufacturing specification drawings and critical section drawings for design reviews.Contribute to product build books and phase gate reviews.Support prototyping through CNC milling, concept mockups, and 3D printing.Perform inspections of parts and assemblies using calipers, micrometers, and CMM.Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and suppliers to improve designs and manufacturing processes.Participate in cross-functional team meetings and project planning activities.ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNEDEXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Degree Required: Associate Degree in Computer Aided Design, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (enrolled or completed).Preferred Degree: Bachelor's Degree in Design Engineering, Transportation Design, Product Design, or related fields. (if applicable)Certificate(s) or License(s):Years of experience: Junior or Senior year of college preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
Proficiency in CAD and CAM software (Catia, Mastercam, or similar).Basic understanding of CNC machining, tooling analysis, and additive manufacturing.Strong ability to think three-dimensionally and translate concept sketches into 3D models.Creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills for feasibility and proof-of-concept studies.Familiarity with roto-molded, aluminum, and composite manufacturing processes.Attention to detail, organizational skills, and documentation accuracy.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.Effective communication and teamwork abilities.Interest in the marine industry is a plus.TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Limited travel to local manufacturing plants, boat shows, and marinas.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regularly walks, sits, stands and does computer work.
Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:
Performs tasks and duties under general supervision, using established procedures and innovation. Chooses from limited alternatives to resolve problems. Occasional independent judgment is required to complete work assignments. Often makes recommendations to work procedures, policies, and practices.
