Reporting to the Supervisor, Spatial Solutions, the Business Technologist is responsible for addressing day to day service requests and provide project support related to the development, implementation, and support of business solutions utilizing variety of software applications (GIS, Amanda, SharePoint, etc.). The primary focus of this position is to support the development, maintenance, and enhancement of spatial and non-spatial data systems within the Town. This includes creating and managing datasets, producing custom cartographic and analytical products, and supporting application development and data visualization using tools such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and Enterprise, and related technologies. The role also involves ensuring data quality through established QA/QC processes, maintaining accurate documentation, and delivering high-quality customer service. The successful candidate will contribute to business solutions by gathering user requirements, supporting project management activities, and providing training and technical support to end users.

Business Solutions & Visualization

Support the creation of business requirements and user needs for clients; assists senior staff in the specification, design, development, installation, testing and documentation of applications.

Designs and prepares custom cartographic products, other spatial data products and graphics such as maps, charts and plans to client specifications using both manual and digital techniques.Develops, creates, and maintains simple spatial and non-spatial datasets. Ensures that all data meets quality requirements.Performs data analysis and visualization tasks utilizing tools such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise (and their extensions) and other applications as required.Assists in application development activities including design, development, implementation and utilization of various applications, tools, technologies, concepts and methodologies, e.g. GIS, or any other application.Supports business activities in the creation and management of data, information, and analytics using a variety of software applications and tools.Utilizes scripting and automation tools such as Python, ArcPy, and Arcade to streamline workflows, enhance data processing, and support application development.

Quality Assurance and Control

Documents and maintains information management processes and metadata for new and updated data sets.

Provides data, through the timely delivery of routinely scheduled updates, to clients, ITS staff, consultants and vendors, to ensure informational needs are met.Promotes quality within software applications by applying Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards and procedures and participates in the development of new standards and procedures as required.

Liaison, Communications and Customer Service

Assists or conducts user training as part of project or process implementation, as well as regularly scheduled system training.Maintain accurate and up to date process, procedural or how to documentation and adheres to document management best practices by utilizing SharePoint and other content management software to keep corporate and departmental information up to date.Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns while ensuring that the services provided meet Town customer service standards.Provides complete and timely support to Commission end users and ensures that they have a thorough understanding of technologies as it applies to their position.

Project & Administrative Management Support 

Provide project management support as part of project teams such documenting meeting minutes, following up on action items, writing project correspondence, maintaining project portal up to date, etc.

Maintain key departmental information up to date both on the internet and intranet.Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Successful completion of a 3-year diploma or degree in Technology Management, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science or a related discipline combined with a minimum of one year experience working with GIS and the development of cartographic and analytic products, including web services and applications, and user requirements and/or spatial information management.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.GIS certification or successful completion of a Planning Technician Program or courses would be an asset.Experience working with relational database systems, spatial databases including database standards, design and data models.Experience working with Quality Assurance/Quality Control principles and identifying data integrity issues.Knowledge and demonstrated computer skills utilizing various applications such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and Enterprise, Adobe InDesign, Office 365, SharePoint, etc.Demonstrated knowledge of GIS principles and application development using GIS software and techniques.Knowledge of relational database systems, data creation methods and techniques and product delivery design and production.Familiarity with scripting and automation using Python, ArcPy, Arcade, and other scripting tools.Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in competencies including customer service, communication, team work, initiative/self-management, accountability, flexibility and adaptability.Ability to implement new applications and apply new technologies with minimal guidance.
