Appointment Type Full Time Regular Exempt/Non-Exempt Exempt General Function The Business Intelligence and Database Analyst develops and automates reporting processes for the Office of Institutional Research and assures the integrity of reported information. This position creates and maintains dashboards providing the ability for decision-makers to drill down in more granular information and quickly and easily change variables. The Business Intelligence and Database Analyst manages data and reporting systems that support the functions of Institutional Research (OIR) and mines data from MSU’s Banner system and other disparate data systems. This role sustains a high-level knowledge base of all MSU database systems for the purposes of programing and relating data in preparation for higher level analytics, such as descriptive, inferential, and predictive statistical methods and applications. The position assures that the information provided complies with federal regulations and University policies, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), that regulate disclosure of student data and ensures the confidentiality of all processed, stored, or accessed data. The Business Intelligence and Database Analyst manages, designs, develops, implements, and incorporates statistical research applications and strategies to provide executive decision-makers easy access to “real time” data. This position contributes to the identification of best practices in developing, implementing, and monitoring data quality to assure the accuracy and reliability of all data released from the Office of Institutional Research. This role maintains a clean data environment in all IR research-related databases. The Business Intelligence and Database Analyst promotes uniformity of OIR database-related programming efforts, coordinates standardized methods for report creation using programing languages, identifies best practices in developing, implementing, and monitoring data quality, and ensures reporting needs are met in a timely manner. This position collaborates across multiple departments, provides solutions that support the achievement of campus goals, and collaborates in joint design efforts in big data analytics.

Description of Primary Duties This position works on the Springfield campus and performs the following functions:

1. Leads the definition, testing, training, implementation, and support of reporting systems for the Office of Institutional Research (OIR).

2. Understands the information located in the various Banner tables and mitigates the requirement constraints imposed by the current system.

3. Troubleshoots issues quickly and appropriately by identifying immediate remediation, determining the root cause, and collaborating with others to determine a long-term solution.

4. Ensures reporting requirements are understood, agreed to, and signed off at the appropriate stages of each project.

5. Provides an ongoing analysis of processes and workflows including suggestions for improvement.

6. Identifies areas where technology can lead to increased efficiency.

7. Collaborates with the Director, Institutional Research to provide dashboards providing data to aid in decision making.

8. Develops dashboards, reporting systems, the OIR data dictionary, and a query repository.

9. Provides user documentation and training for the system.

10. Alerts the Director, Institutional Research of potential risks and issues of importance.

11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the supervisor.

12. Supports the overall success of the Office of Institutional Research by performing other duties as assigned. Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Education: A Bachelor’s degree required, a Master’s degree preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.

Experience: A Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience working in higher education is required. A Master’s degree and three years of experience working Institutional Research or a related environment is preferred.

Skills: Proficiency working with relational database systems, and documented prior experience working with statistical computing software is required. Advanced Excel skills are required. Strong active listening skills as well as an understanding of verbal and written communications regarding work-related documents is required. A strategic approach to innovative thinking and vision and an adeptness for data visualization and dashboard design are required. A solid understanding of database technology and proficiency in handling, organizing, manipulating, storing, and working with large datasets beyond those traditionally handled within a relational system is required. The ability to quickly learn, use, and explain new technologies is required. The ability to maintain confidentiality regarding information processed, stored, or accessed is required.
