No County Albany Street Address 30 South Pearl Street City Albany State NY Zip Code 12207 Duties Description DUTIES:The New York State Canal Corporation is seeking an experienced and dynamic Events and Tourism Manager to join our team. Reporting to the Director for Public Engagement, the Events and Tourism Manager will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing a variety of events and tourism initiatives that promote the New York State Canal System. This role requires a strategic thinker with a passion for event management and tourism development, as well as a deep understanding of the regional cultural and economic landscape. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:• Develop and implement strategic plans for events and tourism initiatives that align with the Canal Corporation's goals and objectives.• Coordinate and manage all aspects of event planning, including logistics, budgeting, marketing, and execution.• Collaborate with local businesses, community organizations, and government agencies to promote the Canal System as a premier tourism destination.• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of events and tourism programs, making recommendations for improvements and future initiatives.• Oversee the creation of promotional materials and campaigns to attract tourists and participants to events.• Manage relationships with vendors, contractors, and sponsors to ensure successful event delivery.• Handle administrative tasks related to event and tourism management, including permits, contracts, and reporting.• Hire and manage seasonal staff that will help facilitate the Canal Corporation’s presence at events such as The Great New York State Fair, regional boat shows, and Canalside community festivals, many of which occur on weekends.• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and safety standards for events. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Event Management, Tourism, Marketing, or a related field.• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in event planning, tourism management, or a related area.• Proven track record of successful event management and tourism promotion.• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the region.***Please note that this position is within the Non-Competitive Jurisdictional Class of the Classified Service of New York State and has been designated as “policy-influencing” per Section 42.2a of the Civil Service Law. Further, this position is non-tenure bearing and the incumbent of this position serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority as per Section 75.1c of the Civil Service Law.***PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:• In-depth understanding of event planning and tourism management principles and practices.• Familiarity with the New York State Canal System and its historical, cultural, and economic significance.• Knowledge of marketing and promotional strategies for tourism and events.• Awareness of local, state, and federal regulations related to event management and public gatherings.• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with diverse stakeholders.• Demonstrated proficiency in using event management software and tools.• Creative problem-solving skills to address challenges and enhance event experiences.• Financial acumen to manage budgets and negotiate contracts.• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.• Capability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers to achieve event goals.• Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing circumstances and needs.• Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality events and tourism experiences.• Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by event schedules.
