Bridge Tunnel Inspection Team Leader

Michael Baker is actively seeking a Lead Bridge & Tunnel Engineer to join our Boston office. This outstanding opportunity includes safety inspections of bridges and tunnels, documentation, manual development, load rating, and rehabilitation design. With a flexible schedule that combines on-site and remote work, this position offers the exceptional opportunity to mentor junior engineers and contribute to top-notch infrastructure.

What You'll Do:

Take charge of safety inspections for bridges and tunnels by ensuring they meet Federal Highway Administration National Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Standards. Develop close working relationships with state and local agencies, vendors, and team members to schedule inspections, manage traffic closures, and uphold meticulous documentation. Produce and review detailed inspection reports, ensuring timely submission for FHWA compliance. Perform load ratings, manual development, and rehabilitation design for a variety of structures. Support in determining the scope of new projects, developing budgets and timelines, ensuring quality standards, and preparing client submission documents. Read and interpret plans, specifications, and other contract documents with precision. Operate various types of inspection equipment and use hand tools, ladders, and other necessary equipment. Independent and Mentored Work: Take ownership of assignments and receive technical mentorship. Dedication to Excellence: Show dedication to quality, accuracy, safety, and efficiency in all tasks. Independently evaluate and apply standard engineering techniques and criteria across a wide range of assignments.

What You Need to Succeed:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with a focus on bridges/structures from an ABET-accredited institution, or equivalent experience. Minimum of 5-8+ years of relevant inspection-focused experience. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. Knowledge of Non-Destructive testing methods. A valid driver’s license and the ability to acquire a DOT Medical Certificate. Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and BlueBeam.

Preferred Qualifications:

Nationally certified bridge and tunnel inspection team leader. NHI Course No. 130055 “Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges” NHI Course No. 130078 “Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges” Experience in inspection, load rating, or design of bridges/tunnels. Proficiency with AASHTOware BrR, STAAD Pro, MDX, CSI Bridge, MathCAD, and other structural analysis software. Ability to manage bridge/structural tasks in project development, including plan and report production. Experience developing structural details and construction plans using industry-standard software.

Compensation:

The approximate compensation range for this position is $120,000-$160,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.  Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
