GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Use your skills to make a difference in your community! This position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations. This is a full-time position working as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor in Albany County. Laramie is a full-service community, home to over 38,000 residents, including many young families. On top of many family-friendly activities, Laramie is also near multiple four-season outdoor recreation areas, including Medicine Bow National Forest and Curt Gowdy State Park. Also, the location provides access to some of the best school districts in Wyoming as well as convenient access to higher education opportunities. Wyoming is one of only nine states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
+ Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contact with all mothers assigned.
+ Schedules routine breastfeeding support contacts with all pregnant and breastfeeding women assigned in the Management Information System (MIS). Maintains a caseload of pregnant and breastfeeding women, dependent on the individual clinic's caseload.
+ Prioritizes appointments based on the needs of the participant and where she might be in her pregnancy or breastfeeding journey.
+ Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new or expecting mothers, staying within the scope of practice, which includes telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. Helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
+ Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, in the WIC clinic, a safe public place, and optional hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC Program.
+ Documents each interaction and appointment between the mother and peer counselor in the MIS, as well as maintains a monthly statistics report on caseload.
+ Sends out regular correspondence to expecting or new mothers that might include breastfeeding education
+ Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential.
+ Helps to maintain serialized breast pump inventory within the local agencies.
+ In conjunction with the CPA providing support, the peer counselor may issue a breast pump to a participant and help to provide general support in pump education.
+ The peer counselor helps to sterilize breast pumps once they are returned to the clinic.
+ Conduct home and hospital visits by living within an acceptable radius of the work site location
+ Provides excellent customer service and greets participants positively and warmly.
+ Ability to work with integrity, trust, and commitment, setting an example for others.
+ Effectively interact with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, treating all people with dignity and respect.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
+ Has breastfed at least one baby for at least 6 months (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
+ Is a current or previous WIC client.
+ Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
+ Can provide a record of or obtain immunization for MMR and Varicella.
KNOWLEDGE:
+ Ability to obtain working knowledge of WIC policies and procedures
+ Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands
+ Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard software
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and external customers
+ Ability to communicate effectively across multiple venues such as telephone, personal interaction and electronic communication, etc.
