ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The roles and responsibilities of a Boilermaker may include but are not limited to the following items:
• Safe use of Hand & Power Tools (trained and proficient to operate as required by PCL, the manufacturer, client and or government requirements).
• Work safely always and promote safety to others around you.
• Perform quality work as determined by the project specifications.
• Accountable for all personal and assigned company tools and project materials.
• Assist immediate supervisor with aligning future tasks to be completed.
• A Boilermaker will remove, replace and/or repair various boiler related structures; work on various coal fired boiler components including soot blowers, burners and dampers; work around and have experience with flue gas desulfurization process and equipment; work on Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRJG) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) structures.

• Must work well as part of a team.
• Keep a clean work area.
• Read blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
• Selects type and size of related materials according to the job specifications.
• Locates and marks reference points for columns or plates on foundation using master straightedge, squares, transit, and measuring tape.
• Aligns structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frame, tanks, or vats, using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, “dogs,” or turnbuckles.
• Aligns water tubes and connects and expands ends to drums and headers using tube expander.
• Hammers flame-cuts, files, or grinds irregular edges of sections or structural parts to facilitate fitting edges.
• Bolts or welds casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles, and such fabricated parts as chutes, air heaters, fan stands, feeding tube, catwalks, ladders, coal hoppers, and safety hatch to frame.
• Installs manholes, valves, gages, and feedwater connection in drums to complete assembly of water tube boilers.
• Bolts or arc-welds structure and sections together.
• Positions drums and headers into supports or weld supports to frame.
• Assemble and station tools and materials needed to optimal and safe place ready for use as required.
• Identify all tools required for task.
• Assist in assuring all required PCL and client Safety and QA/QC forms are properly filled out with all necessary approvals.
• Track all components and materials for project tasks.
• Must be willing to provide guidance and on the job training and mentoring to other crafts.
• Participate fully in health, safety, quality, and environmental processes.
• Must be willing to perform other duties as instructed.
• Conduct oneself as a Role Model when representing PCL when in contact with project and client personnel, coworkers, other contractors and subs, and the community.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Experience: A minimum of four or more years of experience performing industrial, (e.g., petrochemical, power plant or manufacturing facility) boiler making at a journey-level or a combination of practical and NCCER or other accredited training.
Skills:
• Must have ability to work a rotating schedule which includes nights and weekends.
• Knowledge of all types of safe rigging practices (chokers, slings, etc.)
• Knowledge of rigging components (come-a-longs, chain hoists, tuggers – manual, electric and pneumatic)
• Strong working knowledge of, and experience working with, boiler making systems.
• Experience with the methods and techniques used to level, plumb, align, and set the equipment, tube bundles, and internal components of a boiler.
• A basic understanding and knowledge of the functional operation and purpose of the components of boilers.
• Math knowledge and skills as related to the job tasks. Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
• Have a good knowledge of geometry and special relations (picture solid objects from drawings and diagrams.
* Able to effectively use verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to use torch cutting equipment as well as pipe cutting/beveling machines.
• Able to install and remove blinds for isolating fixed equipment.
• Sound knowledge of rigging skills, rigging procedures, OSHA standards, and be able to handle and install large components to boilers.
• Knowledge of materials which requires the proper pre-heating prior to cutting or welding.
• Able to read and understand plans and specifications including orthographic and isometric drawings.
• Able to understand and apply applicable boiler codes and pressure vessel codes.
• Successfully complete the appropriate PCL skills assessment tests.
• Identify all tools required for tasks.
• Must be willing to perform any additional duties as instructed.
