Summary This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Mid-Atlantic Healthcare Network, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 6), Fayetteville VA Medical Center, NC. Responsibilities Conduct technical support or instructed competent workers at lower grade levels in the operation and preventive maintenance of high pressure boiler plant. Analyze and use a manual in their daily work in the boiler plant. Recognizes most malfunctions such as when a bearing knocks. Knowledge and experience independently operating high pressure boilers and possess and maintains a NIULPE First Class Power Engineer License, or equivalent certification. Performs and takes corrective action when there is a malfunction in the boiler plant to include the removal of a burner, burner nozzle, strainer and orifice assemblies; dismantles and locates defects; reassembles and reinstalls components. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work from ladders, platforms, and in hard to reach locations. Works on close, cramped positions inside boilers. Requires standing, waking, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Occasionally required to lift and move heavy objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. Pushes and pulls equipment Work may be done Indoors or outdoors. Position is exposed . to the elements accordingly. Subjected to extreme temperatures, dampness, dirt, dust, noise, lubricants, and solvents. Position must also be continuously aware of health hazards while working in isolation rooms. Also, hazards of cuts, bums, bruises, electrical shock, falls, irritating noise, and potential eye contaminations are present. Necessary safety equipment is provided to counter extreme environmental conditions. Must work in a confined area when assigned to the Boiler Plant and cannot leave the area during tour of duty unless properly relieved by another qualified operator. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
