Summary

The Biosafety Manager oversees the development, implementation, and management of the institution’s biosafety programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role is essential in advancing a culture of safety in the handling of biological materials. The role administers the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and is an active participant in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and provides input and review of protocols from a biosafety perspective. The position oversees activities related to biosafety, conducts biosafety training, coordinates inspections, and oversees incident review processes. It ensures that all biosafety practices align with institutional policies and regulatory standards, supporting the health and safety of researchers, staff, and the public.

The Ideal Candidate:

Proven expertise in biosafety, with strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., NIH, CDC, OSHA). Exceptional organizational and communication skills to manage committees, deliver training, and develop safety programs. Experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and laboratory inspections in a research setting. Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across departments to enhance biosafety practices. Passion for promoting a safe research environment and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

 

Responsibilities:

Serve as the primary institutional resource for biosafety regulatory compliance. Design and implement biohazardous agent programs to meet current regulatory and institutional requirements, including policies, standards, biosafety manual(s), and site exposure control plan(s). Coordinate and facilitate Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) activities, including reviewing research protocols involving recombinant DNA, pathogens, and biological materials. Coordinates with the IACUC on biosafety-related matters in animal research. Design, coordinate, and deliver biosafety training programs for research team members, staff, and students, as well as support personnel and other identified groups. Evaluate and enhance training materials to reflect current regulations and best practices. Conduct regular biosafety inspections of research laboratories and facilities, ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. Develop corrective action plans for non-compliance issues and follow up to ensure timely resolution. Lead investigations into biosafety-related incidents, including exposure events and containment breaches. Collaborate with other departments on corrective and preventive actions to enhance biosafety practices.

 

Credentials and Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental, Public Health, or related field is required. Three (3) years of professional experience in biosafety within a research institution or academic setting, including experience in conducting risk assessments, inspections, and training is required. Gathered and organized data on biohazards and biohazardous processes. Participated in biological risk and biosecurity risk assessments. Participated in multiple incident investigations. Developed and delivered training on biohazardous agents and materials. Developed, conducted, and documented regular site inspections to ensure compliance with biosafety policies and procedures. Participated in audits to measure effectiveness of site biosafety programs. In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local biosafety regulations, standards, and guidelines (e.g., NIH, CDC, OSHA). Proficiency in managing and facilitating IBC and IACUC biosafety functions. Strong communication and organizational skills to deliver effective training, develop safety programs, and conduct or assist with leading committee meetings. Conduct risk assessments, assign biosafety containment levels (e.g. BSL, ABSL), and implement recommended work practices, engineering controls and facility design requirements to mitigate risk associated with work involving biohazardous agents and materials. Demonstrated ability to handle biosafety incidents and conduct thorough incident reviews. A comprehensive understanding of requirements for proper biological laboratory design and operation.
