Overview

The Biology Department at Salem State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in vertebrate biology to begin September 2026. We seek a colleague whose expertise integrates contemporary methods in molecular biology or evolutionary biology to study vertebrate systems. Teaching responsibilities may also include introductory biology courses for non-majors (e.g., Human and Social Biology, Diversity of Life), sophomore-level evolution, and/or upper-level electives currently in our catalog (e.g., Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Natural History of Vertebrates, Fish Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology) or developed by the successful candidate. The ideal candidate will have the ability to engage students in research opportunities and/or field experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.

PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., biology, zoology, natural history).Experience teaching at the college/university level.Demonstrated experience mentoring undergraduates.Experience with engaging and inclusive pedagogies in lectures, lab, and/or online modalities.

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise in bioinformatics or coding languages (e.g., R, python).Experience working with a diverse student body.Experience teaching both introductory and upper-level courses.A desire to involve undergraduates in research and inquiry both inside and outside the classroom.As a Hispanic and Minority Serving Institution (HSI/MSI), Salem State University seeks to enrich the faculty/librarian ranks by actively encouraging candidates whose lived experiences align with those of our students and/or whose body of scholarly work addresses issues regarding the welfare and representation of Latino other historically under-served communities in the United States.
