About this Job
LDWF’s Inland Fisheries Hatchery System is seeking to hire a Biologist Supervisor responsible for exercising supervision and coordination of activities associated with sport fish production across 4 locations; Booker Fowler and Beechwood Fish Hatcheries in Forest Hill, Monroe Fish Hatchery in Monroe, and Huey P. Long Fish Hatchery in Lacombe. This position is domiciled in Forest Hill, Louisiana at the Booker Fowler Fish Hatchery.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus four years of experience in wildlife or fisheries, forestry, or environmental science; OR
A non-thesis master's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus three years of the required specialized experience; OR
A master's degree with a completed thesis or a doctorate in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus two years of the required specialized experience.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
This is a supervisor position, directly involved in field and office activities. The position is responsible for supervising four subordinates and overseeing daily activities associated with freshwater sport fish production and stocking, facility and equipment operation and maintenance.
Duties include:
+ Assigns day to day fish culture and grounds maintenance activities including fish care, fish feeding, fish handling, fish production, estimating numbers of fish, sampling fish, fish transport, fish stocking; pond care, pond preparation and fertilizing, water quality monitoring, pond harvesting; and supply procurement and tracking
+ Assists Biologist Manager with identifying equipment and grounds maintenance needs
+ Stays informed on new techniques, technology, and regulations related to fisheries biology, fisheries management, and fish culture through reading and attending professional meetings/workshops and applies this knowledge to the workplace
+ Applies common sense and general knowledge of the mechanical operations of the hatchery to make quick decisions in response to break-downs, power outages, and frequently changing biochemical situations associated with aquaculture
+ Supervisory activities including performance tracking, mediating conflicts, and fair distribution of work assignments
+ Assists Biologist Manager with reports and specifications for purchasing/repairing hatchery equipment. Meets paperwork/reporting deadlines and promotes team work
+ Conducts hatchery tours and assists with Fisheries Outreach & Education events as requested
+ Communicates with and educates the public about the role of hatcheries
Provides advice to the public regarding private pond management/pond problem solving
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, Job Appointment, or Detail to Special Duty
Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.
This position is located in Rapides Parish.
