Backend Architect (Node.js)

Work location: TOPCON Office located in Bologna ( Italy )

Smart working activity ( home office) for 3 days per week

Job Purpose

We’re building intelligent platforms that automate and optimize construction and geospatial workflows — and we’re looking for a Backend Architect with deep expertise in Node.js, cloud-native architecture, and high-load distributed systems.

This is a hands-on, senior-level role where you’ll lead the design and scalability of complex backend services — with a strong focus on AWS cloud efficiency, performance, and resilience at scale.

🎯 What You’ll Do

Architect and evolve backend infrastructure for mission-critical, high-traffic applications used globallyDesign scalable systems using Node.js and TypeScript, applying modern async patterns and event-driven designLead architectural decisions related to cloud infrastructure (AWS) — optimizing for cost-efficiency, scalability, and resilienceDefine and enforce engineering best practices across backend teamsWork with DevOps and SREs to ensure production systems are reliable, observable, and easily maintainableCollaborate cross-functionally with product, frontend, and data teams to shape end-to-end solutionsDrive architectural reviews, documentation, and mentoring across the engineering organization

✅ What We’re Looking For

University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.10+ working experience in Software Development field.6+ years of backend development experience, with at least 3+ years architecting large-scale systems in Node.js / TypeScriptProven track record building and scaling high-load, cloud-native systems in productionDeep understanding of AWS services (e.g., ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, CloudWatch) and cost-efficient architecture designStrong knowledge of microservices, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and message-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)Experience with both NoSQL and relational databases and their performance tuning in large-scale environmentsSolid grasp of software architecture principles: domain-driven design, event sourcing, clean architectureExcellent communication skills and ability to drive technical discussions in EnglishComfortable working in distributed, cross-cultural teams

🌟 Nice to Have

Hands-on experience optimizing cloud cost at scale using AWS Budgets, Graviton, or Spot InstancesExposure to Edge computing, real-time data streaming, or geo-distributed systemsFamiliarity with Terraform, Pulumi, or other IaC toolsBackground in geospatial, GIS, or construction tech is a plusLeadership experience in mentoring or scaling global engineering teams
