Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama is seeking applications for a part-time, hourly, fixed-term Audio Technician position. The appointment will begin on September 15, 2025, and conclude on May 15, 2026.
Hours will vary week to week, with some periods approaching full-time and others with little to no scheduled work. This fluctuation is based on the production phases of five different projects. A projected calendar can be provided upon request.
This is a dynamic opportunity for an individual who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment. The Audio Technician will play a vital role in supporting productions and events, while also assisting with the maintenance of audio equipment and infrastructure.
Core responsibilities will include:
Supervising the installation of theatrical audio systems in a theater
Mentoring students in the process of installing theatrical audio systems in a theater
Serving as a crew member and/or participating in the above activities, either under student supervisors, or solo especially when students are not available.
Engineering and construction of practical audio devices for use in theatrical production
Other duties as assigned
Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within the School of Drama. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
The work of an Audio Technician often involves a need to work at heights greater than 30’, use of a ladder or personnel lift, the lifting and/or carrying of awkward and/or heavy objects and the manipulation of hand tools and equipment in small or confined spaces for short periods of time. While the ability to perform these tasks is not necessary to fulfill the primary goal of this position, if these scenarios present themselves the Audio Technician will need to be able to find alternative means of completing the tasks involved.
Qualifications:
Two years’ experience as a audio technician in the entertainment industry
Experience as head audio technician on at least three theatrical productions
Knowledge of and experience in maintaining entertainment audio equipment
Experience programming theatrical audio control consoles (Yamaha and Digico consoles preferred)
Experience with audio networks and Dante
Requirements:
Successful Background Check
Application:
Upload letter and resume. Applicant review begins immediately, and will continue until a final candidate is identified or until 1 August 2025, whichever comes first.
