The Athletics Mental Health Counselor will oversee the delivery of mental health services for the athletics department, as well as serve as the liaison with other university positions. This includes collaborating with the Sports Medicine department, Applied Sport Psychology graduate program and other entities to ensure a holistic approach to student-athlete development. Position Summary The Athletics Mental Health Counselor is responsible for the administrative oversight of all mental health services within Intercollegiate Athletics. This individual will provide one on one counseling sessions to student-athletes dealing with personal and performance challenges. This individual will serve on the Intercollegiate Athletics Mental Health Support Team. This individual will be expected to communicate and interact effectively, respectfully, and appropriately with diverse populations in the Department, the University, and the community. This individual must maintain efficient paper and electronic records. The Athletics Mental Health Counselor is responsible for overseeing the mental health support for student-athletes in the athletics program. This includes, but is not limited to, one-on-one counseling sessions, mental health educational programing and managing crisis situations. The responsibilities also include the coordination and implementation of pre-participation mental health screenings and referrals of student-athletes to the appropriate health care professionals when necessary. In addition, the position collaborates with different units on campus to increase the overall health and well-being of our student-athletes. Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in a mental health related field Licensed or license-eligible in the State of North Carolina as a Mental Health provider (e.g., LCMHC, LPC, LCSW), or the ability to obtain licensure in North Carolina within 3-6 months Training (e.g., degree or specialization) in sport psychology or a related field and/or 1-2 years of experience in providing sport psychology/mental performance services Effective written and verbal communication skills; multi-tasking skills; experience of managing staff and budget management Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program or a related field Training (e.g., degree or specialization) in sport psychology or a related field and 2-4 years of experience in providing sport psychology/mental performance services Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) Prior experience working with student-athlete populations in a Division I athletic department Special Instructions to Applicants Recruitment Range Commensurate with experience Org #-Department Intercollegiate Athletics - 85001 Job Open Date 04/09/2025 For Best Consideration Date Job Close Date Open Until Filled Yes FTE 1.000 Type of Appointment Permanent If time-limited, please specify end date for appointment. Percentage Of Time 75% Key Responsibility Mental Health Counseling Essential Tasks The Assistant Athletic Mental Health Counselor will maintain regular office hours to provide mental health counseling to student-athletes in accordance with best practices. The Assistant Athletic Mental Health Counselor will make appropriate referrals to outside medical professionals, when necessary. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Program Administration Essential Tasks The Athletic Mental Health Counselor will be responsible for maintaining all athletics mental health policies. This individual will work closely with coaches, athletic trainers, and other support staff to ensure a holistic approach to athlete development. They will conduct workshops for student- athletes on various mental health topics. This individual will maintain appropriate paper and electronic records. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Interdepartmental Collaboration Essential Tasks The Athletic Mental Health Counselor will collaborate closely with various campus entities, including but not limited to: Kinesiology Department, Counseling & Psychology Services and Nicholas A. Vacc Clinic.
