DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT:

The Alma College Athletics Department will advance the mission of the college by providing athletic experiences that lead student-athletes to graduate as informed and responsible citizens of the world. We provide an equitable, diverse, competitive intercollegiate athletic program that complements academic achievement by enabling students to understand the principles of fairness, responsibility and leadership. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Athletics Director (AD) is responsible for the overall leadership and administration of Alma College’s intercollegiate athletics program. This includes the recruitment and supervision of coaches and administrative staff, oversight of departmental finances and facilities, and the development of effective student-athlete recruitment and retention strategies. The AD ensures compliance with all relevant NCAA, MIAA, college, state, and federal regulations.

The successful candidate will integrate Alma College’s mission, vision, and values into the daily operations of the athletics department and serve as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is a full-time, exempt position that requires evening and weekend commitments.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

This position reports directly to the President and collaborates frequently with members of the President’s Cabinet. Direct reports include head coaches, the Associate Athletics Director, Assistant Athletics Director for Communication, Marketing & Sports Information, the Head Athletic Trainer, and the Communications and Compliance Reporting Assistant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – May include, but are not limited to:

Administrative Responsibilities

• Provide leadership for an athletics department grounded in the five Cs of intercollegiate excellence:

o Compliance with college, NCAA, state, and federal regulations o Character development that supports life skills and ethical leadership o Classroom success, including high team GPAs and graduation rates o Community representation, where student-athletes serve as proud ambassadors of the college o Championship-level competition, where all teams strive for conference titles • Recruit and supervise a professional staff that reflects the college’s mission and values. • Establish and pursue long-term departmental goals aligned with the college’s strategic plan. • Manage department finances responsibly, including budget oversight, capital improvements, and equipment maintenance. • Oversee facilities, sports information, and event scheduling to engage both campus and community audiences. • Represent the college professionally to internal and external stakeholders. • Ensure compliance with all NCAA, MIAA, and legal standards. • Support the coaching staff in building competitive programs that elevate the college’s presence in the MIAA. • Partner with the Advancement Office to support alumni engagement and fundraising efforts. • Participate in campus committees and official functions as a member of the senior leadership team.

Recruitment, Retention, and Competitive Responsibilities

•Collaborate with the Vice President for Admissions, Marketing, and Communications to recruit prospective student-athletes with both academic and athletic potential. • Ensure that each head coach develops and implements an annual recruitment and retention plan, with measurable outcomes. • Partner with Student Affairs to develop a robust recreation and intramural program. • Foster cross-departmental collaboration to support the holistic development of student-athletes. • Create and implement a strategic framework aimed at winning the MIAA Commissioner’s Trophy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
• At least five years of professional athletics administration experience, with a minimum of two years in a leadership role
• Demonstrated knowledge of multi-sport intercollegiate athletics management
• Understanding of NCAA regulations and Title IX compliance
• Effective communication skills with diverse audiences in a clear, compassionate manner
• Strong ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information
• Analytical skills to gather data and produce clear, concise reports
• Public speaking experience
• Proven ability to set priorities, solve problems, and manage multiple tasks
• Demonstrated policy development and implementation skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree
• Experience as a head coach
• Familiarity with MIAA regulations
• Fundraising experience
• Experience working with underrepresented, first-generation, and Pell-eligible student     populations

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to participate actively in meetings and events across various campus and community locations.
