Our team is dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanical and physical behavior of ice-coating interfaces. The ultimate goal is to create new materials and coatings that can passively prevent or shed ice effectively, with applications ranging from vehicle windshields to solar cells and aircraft. As part of a top national public research institution, Michigan Engineering's mission is to provide scientific and technological leadership to the people of the world, develop intellectually curious and socially conscious minds, create collaborative solutions to societal problems, and promote an inclusive and innovative community of service for the common good. **Responsibilities*** + Lead the design and execution of experiments to develop new ice-shedding and anti-icing coatings. + Synthesize and characterize novel materials, including transparent polymer networks and durable coatings. + Evaluate coating performance through mechanical testing, including ice adhesion strength measurements and durability assessments. + Utilize advanced characterization techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and rheology to analyze material properties and ice-coating interfaces. + Collaborate with computational and theoretical researchers to validate models and inform new material design principles. + Supervise and mentor graduate students and post-docs in experimental design and data analysis. + Prepare professional-level documentation, research reports, and manuscripts for publication. **Required Qualifications*** + PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field. + At least one year of post-doctoral research experience. + Strong background in polymer synthesis and materials characterization. + Proven expertise in surface chemistry and the development of functional coatings. + Hands-on experience with mechanical testing, specifically for adhesion and fracture. + Proficiency with analytical instruments such as FTIR, SEM, rheometers, and goniometers. + Expertise in data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB or Python) and statistical methods. **Desired Qualifications*** + Experience with elastomer / rubber fabrication and testing. + Knowledge of fracture mechanics, particularly as it applies to interfacial toughness. + Experience in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment. + A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals. + Experience in grant writing and project management. **Modes of Work** Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
