This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic in-house litigation team responsible for managing Cigna and Evernorth’s healthcare, commercial, corporate, investigations, and affirmative litigation portfolio. This is a next-level development step for an experienced litigator – to apply their skills to support The Cigna Group’s affirmative (plaintiff-side) litigation practice.
This Associate Senior Counsel position is an individual contributor role that reports to a managing attorney based in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
This role is an excellent fit for a strategic thinker who would assist business teams in resolving business-to-business disputes and proactively protecting company rights through opportunities in litigation. This role is best for a self-starter who will help to build Cigna's recovery practice, build buy-in with internal and external stakeholders, and own cases start to finish. Experience litigating federal and state healthcare and/or pharmacy benefits law is preferred, though not required.
Direct and manage all aspects of a varied commercial litigation portfolio, including investigation, pleadings and discovery through the pre-trial, trial, settlement and appeal processes;Effectively direct and manage outside counsel;Work collaboratively within the Legal Department (including Compliance, Government Affairs and Communications colleagues), as well as business stakeholders;Evaluate financial impact and litigation funding options relevant to litigation disputes;Provide proactive, solution-oriented advice and counseling to support and protect business goals and objectives in connection with pre-litigation disputes;Employ highly polished and effective communication, listening, and writing skills, with a focus on interaction with and reporting to senior managers and executive leadership within a global and matrixed organization; andParticipate in and contribute positively to the Cigna Legal communityQUALIFICATIONS:
J.D. and active state bar membership(s) is requiredMinimum of 7+years of litigation experience at a top firm, with the federal government, and/or in-house, preferably addressing plaintiff-side or affirmative litigation;Experience representing health insurance or pharmacy benefit management companies is preferred;Strong people skills;Financial acumen;Ability to present complex legal issues to non-lawyers;Demonstrated good judgment;Team focus;Learning agility and intellectual curiosity; andWillingness to take on difficult projectsWillingness to travel occasionally* This is a hybrid role, requiring on-site presence in the office three days per week.If you will be working at home occasionally or permanently, the internet connection must be obtained through a cable broadband or fiber optic internet service provider with speeds of at least 10Mbps download/5Mbps upload.For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 152,500 - 254,100 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.
This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus and long term incentive plan.
