About the Role
We are looking for someone with expertise in life cycle assessment and broadly sustainability metrics such as material flow analysis, core tools in industrial ecology, to join the editorial team of Chem Circularity as an Associate Scientific Editor.
Chem Circularity will be the home for cutting-edge research pursuing sustainable and circular systems across disciplines. The journal will publish insights and innovations transforming linear processes to sustainable, closed-loop systems, with an emphasis on reduction, redesign, reuse, and recycling. The journal will bridge fields and scales from chemistry, to materials, to engineering, to full systems.
This entry-level role is designed for those pursuing a career in publishing. You will assess manuscript submissions, manage the peer-review process, and ensure articles are rigorous, relevant, and impactful. As part of a launch, you will be immersed in every stage of the launch, from heavy commissioning, author engagement, marketing, and more! You will also engage with researchers to expand the journal’s network of authors and readers, travel to international conferences, and visit research institutes.
You will also work closely with colleagues across Operations, Production, Marketing, and other editorial teams in physical sciences and sustainability, embracing a One Cell Press ethos.
This is a full-time in-house editorial position locating in or around one of our China offices.
Responsibilities:
Recruiting research articles and commissioning reviews and opinion pieces;
Marketing the launch of Chem Circularity
Engaging with the scientific community (conferences, institutional visits, calls);
Reading, assessing, and triaging submissions;
Finding referees and managing the peer-review process;
Making editorial decisions and writing decision letters;
Supporting other Cell Press titles with submission transfers, content recruitment, and promotion;
Supporting Editorial Operations and Production with manuscript handling and publication;
Contributing to social media posts and writing short editorial pieces.
Requirements
Proven expertise in the performance and assessment of life cycle assessments (LCAs), and/or experience with common metrics of sustainability used by engineers and industrial ecologists to assess impact of technologies on overall system sustainability and cost
Proven expertise with data and software associated with LCAs, as well as ability to compare LCAs in the context of other technologies, and apply across scales
Additional experience in related or unrelated areas of research is a plus (biotechnology, circularity, upcycling/recycling, chemistry and catalysis, materials science);
Knowledge of current state-of-the-art and current research leaders in the field of circular chemistry, materials science, biotechnology, and engineering
Passion for fundamental and applied research and strong interest in communicating science;
Basic understanding of academic publishing options in the field, including key competitor titles.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
Ability to work independently and collaboratively;
Availability to travel within China
