This job contributes to Starbucks success by managing customs systems, processes and reporting for designated customs functional responsibilities and directly or indirectly managing team performance to minimize overall customs liabilities and enhance customs compliance.  This role facilitates preferential duty programs, customs audits, the accuracy and compliance of customs declarations, and executes work on U.S. Customs partnership programs such as ISA.  The associate manager implements and manages key team compliance processes and systems in accordance with customs regulations. Candidates must have a strong working knowledge of supply chain, accounting and global trade systems, import and export requirements.

For customs requirements in the US, Canada and other countries, this position acts as a subject matter expert advising on or performing complex and material functional responsibilities for business channels and activities working with cross-functional teams, external service providers and customs regulatory authorities.  This position manages error risk analysis, contributes continuous improvements and ensures that Starbucks meets its responsibilities for areas of accountability.

As an associate manager of customs, you will…

Manage customs team’s portfolio of existing systems and technology projects, oversee updates and maintenance, establish policies and identify best practices and improvements to enhance customs technology utilization, resolve problems, and manage risks. Lead the development of the global trade management roadmap. Coordinate customs system enhancements with IT partners, functional and business systems analysts, cross functional teams, and customs brokers on small to large projects. Track project progress and provide updates to impacted parties. Communicate new system functionality to department and assist users in understanding implications. Lead customs system and data management projects impacting customs systems. Influence decisions, develop solution proposals and business cases and document customs technology requirements. Help design and develop processes, tools, and enhancements to support the highly customized Customs team requirements. Collaborate with IT developers in testing system fixes, enhancements, and implementations to ensure functionality and user acceptance. Ensure communication and training for impacted parties. Integrate global customs technology and process requirements with other Starbucks business systems. Represent customs function on cross-functional project teams and provide expertise to assess potential financial and operations impacts.  May lead cross-functional projects to incorporate customs requirements in business systems. Maintain integrity and functionality of customs technology systems by monitoring system performance, analyzing problems, and providing recommendations to management. Ensure usability of systems data by monitoring data integrity and record completeness. Work with service providers to correct any mapping or transmission errors and identify opportunities for increased efficiencies and accuracy of data.  Communicate issues and requirements with Starbucks partners and external service providers. Collaborate with Customs management to develop documentation and training to support the team’s needs. Provide on-going end-user customs systems training to ensure continued and correct use of applications and to roll out new tools, enhancements and procedures. Provide end user support for customs system issues or problems. Troubleshoot, identify, and track system issues to ensure resolution and keep systems operational. Develop recommendations and coordinate issue resolution with Information Technology (IT) and outside service providers based on Customs team priorities. Document and communicate problem resolution. Help identify risks and opportunities and participate cross functionally to implement solutions that drive process improvements and strengthen the control environment. Design processes to execute internal controls and provide evidence of internal audit performance to management as well as internal and external auditors. Provide support on external customs audits to ensure Starbucks compliance with customs laws and process requirements. Oversee reporting and documentation used to support audits.  Develop reporting, dashboards and visualizations to support customs activities, audit controls, and KPIs. Perform complex analytics to model trade wars impacts, potential customs programs, impacts of Starbucks initiatives, and other customs developments. Perform account reconciliation to support duty and fee payments to customs authorities. We’d love to hear from people with: 5-10 years progressive experience with systems implementation, accounting transactions, cross border and/or supply chain responsibilities Bachelor’s degree preferred. Preferably in accounting, systems, supply chain, business or finance or other related fields    Licensed Customs Broker preferred (or candidate) Experience utilizing finance/accounting systems and reporting tools for required customs purposes. 5-7 yrs Experience managing recurring customs processes or functional resources for large multinational company preferred 5-7 yrs Advanced skills in Excel, Miro, Oracle EBS, Powerpoint, Visio, and other relevant applications to this role 5 yrs Exposure and business-applicable experience in data query and transformation tools including SQL, Alteryx, and Tableau 3 yrs Experience gathering business requirements, user acceptance testing, process documentation, and business process improvements Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and oral communication Ability to manage recurring processes while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines and maintaining attention to detail Demonstrated ability to work well in a team and collaborate effectively with the team and cross functionally to accomplish goals  Attention to detail and curious mindset

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
