Description of Job **This is a Term-Limited Position ending on 12/31/2026** The Associate Historian is a part-time team member working under the supervision of the State & National Register Historian and the Chief Operating Officer to support History Colorado’s administration of the National Register of Historic Places and the State Register of Historic Properties and assists as needed with other functions of the Preservation Planning Unit and is accountable for the following outcomes: + Administration of the National and State Register Programs + Community & Property Owner Engagement + Review & Preparation of National & State Register Nominations Description of Duties: Administration of the National and State register programs + Providing technical information and assistance to property owners/stewards (both public and private) and/or consultants who are preparing nomination forms for submission to the State Review Board, the History Colorado Board of Directors, and the National Park Service + Reviewing Preliminary Property Eligibility forms from internal and external sources + Notifying the preparers and property owners of eligibility determinations, and entering information into all necessary databases and information repositories. + Maintaining an excellent working knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply the Federal and State regulations for the National and State Register programs. + Participating in and presenting at internal Review Panel meetings by presenting individual properties for consideration and providing expert opinions on property eligibility. + Entering information from completed State and National Register nominations into all necessary databases and information repositories + Providing additional assistance for the functioning of the National and State Register program at History Colorado, as determined by the PPU staff. Community Engagement + Delivering exceptional customer service, including providing program information via phone, email, + and meetings (both “in community” and virtual) to a variety of stakeholders and others interested in + historic preservation. + Communicating with partners across the state to provide support and guidance to property + owners/stewards, including some travel. + Broaden awareness generally, and in particular with historically excluded communities, about the + National and State Register programs in Colorado. Review & Preparation of National & State Register Nominations + Effectively preparing, reviewing, editing, and rewriting (as needed) National and State Register + nominations, in coordination with supervisor and/or PPU staff. + Reviewing draft nominations submitted by Heritage for All Fellows, independent contractors, or + community members + Completing edits and changes to the draft nominations as requested by the Review Board meeting + to advance the nomination to the next stage in the process. + Work directly with the National Park Service reviewer and staff to ensure that the nomination + meets any requested changes in meeting the standards and requirements for listing. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights This position requires: + Meet Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards (preferably Architectural History or History), as defined in 36 CFR Part 61. + Master’s Degree in historic preservation, architectural history, history, planning, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning strongly preferred. + Demonstrated experience advancing architectural survey and designation goals in historically excluded and marginalized communities. + Directly relevant experience in historical research and writing. + Knowledge of historic preservation practice and principles. + Strong computer and associated technical skills. + Highly motivated, creative, high energy, action-oriented + Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment that depends on a high degree of accuracy + Highly skilled written and oral communicator, with the ability to convey information about complex programs and projects + Eagerness to ensure all Coloradans and their respective histories are reflected in the National and State Registers + Commitment to delivering exceptional customer service by phone, email, virtually, and in-person across the state.
