**Job Description**
**The Position**
The successful candidate will oversee a global patent portfolio in a defined subject matter area, evaluate intellectual property aspects of business development and commercial opportunities, and develop strategies, provide legal support and counsel business clients with respect to intellectual property.
**Responsibilities**
+ Prepare and prosecute global patent portfolios for defined subject matter areas and work closely with research, development and technical operations teams to advise and guide patent development and strategy.
+ Direct and manage patent prosecution strategy.
+ Support business development from an intellectual property perspective, conduct due diligence for potential licenses, acquisitions and commercial arrangements with other parties, author the patent provisions of definitive agreements, and manage the patent portfolios resulting from these transactions.
+ Review and assess Company and third-party patents and patent applications to determine expiration, scope and level of protection and opportunities.
+ Assess and advise on business and legal risks of proposed business actions and transactions arising out of patent law considerations.
+ Retain and manage outside counsel and work with them on patent prosecution.
+ Establish and manage budgets that align with interests of the business, working creatively with outside counsel to minimize costs and fees.
+ Explain IP concepts, including patent protection and expiration, freedom to operate, etc., to non-patent lawyers and business personnel.
+ Work closely and collaboratively with others in the IP team, business clients, other members of the Office of General Counsel, and Global Communications.
+ Assist other members of Organon’s legal team as needed across all business units.
+ Supervise paralegals and others in patent prosecution.
**Required Education, Experience and Skills**
+ A bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution in biology, chemistry or other life science field.
+ JD degree required - Graduate of an accredited US law school, with admission to the Bar of New Jersey or another state.
+ Registered as a patent practitioner with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
+ Three (3) or more years of legal experience in the pharmaceutical patent area at a law firm or corporate setting.
+ Excellent teamwork, communication (written and oral) and analytical skills, and a high degree of business acumen.
+ Experience in managing a significant workload, with the ability to juggle competing tasks in a fast paced and challenging environment.
+ Experience operating in ambiguous circumstances.
+ Ability to provide timely, practical and compliant solutions while managing legal risks and demonstrating superior legal judgment.
+ Ability to be proactive and take initiative.
+ Highly competent at advising and guiding Senior Leadership on patent development and strategy for the Company.
+ Highly skilled at guiding business teams on patent strategies
**Preferred Experience and Skills**
+ Experience in in-house pharmaceutical patent prosecution preferred.

The applicable salary range for this position in the U.S. is stated below. Benefits offered in the U.S. include a retirement savings plan, paid vacation and holiday time, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
**Annualized Salary Range (US)**
$168,000.00 - $285,800.00
