Assistant Research Scientist (Full-Time)
Overview The Institute of Human Development and Social Change (IHDSC) is the largest interdisciplinry research center on NYU's Washington Square Campus with a portfolio of over $50 million in active federally- and privately-funded research grants. The R.I.S.E. Lab, co-run by Applied Psychology faculty members, Dr. Godfrey and Dr. Javdani, and housed within IHDSC, advances research and knowledge to improve the lives of traditionally marginalized youth populations, focusing on urban poverty, court-involved women and youth, and adolescents at high risk for court involvement, through the rigorous application of translational, interdiscplinary research paradigms. This includes a multi-year research-practice-policy partnership with Reimagine Freedom/Young Women's Freedom Centers (RF/YWFC) which focus on bringing together systems-impacted girls, women, and trans youth of all genders to create a world in which all young women and trans youth of all genders have the support they need to recognize and end all forms of oppression, to heal, and to live self-determined lives. NYU's Prison Education Program (PEP) aims to expand access to higher education with communities impacted by the criminal legal system. Through PEP, faculty across NYU teach college credit-bearing courses within Wallkill Correctional Facility and support students' education and transition on campus following release. Position Summary PIs Godfrey and Javdani seek a full-time research scientist to lead a research-practice-policy partnership with Reimagine Freedom/Young Women's Freedom Centers (RF/YWFC) and contribute to the programmatic mission of NYUs Prison Education Program. Specifically, in this role, the research scientist will lead the creation, implementation, and dissemination of RF/YWFC data evaluation system; advance the university-community partnership and the organizations' county and state-wide policy initiatives through disseminating YWFC research and programmatic impact; and manage administrative and operational responsibilities throughout the pre- and post-award phases of the grant life cycle. This research scientist will also develop and teach courses to NYU PEP students, and assist PEPs Faculty Director and Executive Director in planning public programming, and participating in other activities of PEP. Essential Functions: Community-Engaged Data Evaluation Creation, Implementation, and Dissemination (50%) + Develop the longitudinal monitoring and evaluation data system for Reimagine Freedom/Young Women's Freedom Centers (RF/YWFC); this includes determining the longitudinal evaluation points to evaluate their programs and larger theory of change, creating the data collection processes and protocols for implementation, and monitoring of ongoing data collection and analysis systems. + Mixed-method measurement development, including co-creating surveys, focus group and interview protocols to evaluate program processes and outcomes among individuals who participate in and deliver RF/YWFC programs across California. + Lead the training, roll out, and implementation of mixed-method data evaluation and monitoring system across all RF/YWFC sites. + Co-lead participatory action research (PAR) training with and for participants and staff at RF/YWFC; this includes creating PAR protocols for RF/YWFC staff; co-leading the training delivered to youth researchers; and evaluating its impact. + Lead the analysis of program and policy initiatives delivered across Reimagine Freedom; this includes local program development, design, and evaluation and the larger impact of Reimagine Freedom across California, with a focus on how their model advances liberation and transformatino among systems-impacted girls and women. + Maintain and effectively collaborate with Reimagine Freedom staff and leader to ensure all evaluation efforts align with their mission, vision, and values; and respond to needs of local, state-wide, and national funders. + Advance the university-community partnership and the organizations' county- and state-wide policy initiatives through disseminating YWFC research and progammatic impact in partnership with Reimagine Freedom/YWFC staff. + Lead and co-author peer-reviewed publications to disseminate the RF/YWFC innovative model of empowerment and change. Grants and Research Operations Support (17%) + Co-write grants in partnership with RF/YWFC and PEP leadership to support ongoing program and policy initiatives. + Liaise closely with IHDSC, the Steinhardt Office of Research, and NYU Office of Sponsored Programs to track proposal submissions and ensure compliance with University and sponsor guidelines. + Manage IRB matters for all RF/YWFC and PEP projects. + Train and manage undergraduate and masters level students who support data entry and analysis. + Lead the development and submission of grant proposals, including drafting materials, preparing checklists, developing project budgets, coordinating with subaward sites, editing and formatting attachments, and assembling proposal packages alongside IHDSC's pre-award team and research teams, with the goal of expanding RF/YWFC research-practice-partnership goals and PEP's gender-equity vision. Curricula Development and Teaching (33%) + Grow the curriculum, develop courses, and teach incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students in close collaboration with the PEP Executive Director. + Assist PEP's Faculty Director and Executive Director in planning public programming, and participating in other activities of PEP. In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $80,000-$90,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. Per NYU's remote-work policy, this position is expected to be hybrid (2-3 days/week in person). This position has supervisory responsibilities and will be supervising 3-5 students and 1-2 part-time employees. PhD required; with 8-10 years of experience leading community-engaged research in partnership with community-based organizations and system stakeholders; experience working directly in community with those impacted by the legal system including formal experience collaborating with leaders to advance program and policy change; quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method design and analysis experience; experience managing and leading research teams including grants management, operations, and administrative duties; experience developing and teaching curriculum. Highly responsive. Flexible and able to routinely juggle competing priorities in a fast-pased, deadline-driven environment. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders including faculty, students, funders, and department, school, and university administrators.
