Overview
The Assistant Pulp Mill Superintendent – Bleached Pulp, is responsible for direct management of safety, environmental, production and cost parameters associated with the conversion of brown pulp to bleached plant delivered to Additives and Stock Prep department. This position will oversee both the day-to-day and long term operation of two bleaching lines, ClO2 generation and the chemical unloading area. This position will require the individual to develop competency in other operations of the Pulp Mill, so as to be of assistance as needed during call outs or in the absence of another area Assistant Superintendent.
The Assistant Pulp Mill Superintendent reports directly to the Fiberline Superintendent. The Assistant Pulp Mill Superintendent directly supervises hourly employees in the bleach plant and chemical unloading areas.
Responsibilities
+ Promotes and fosters the development and maintenance of a safe work environment. Leads for safety by example by following established safety rules. Coaches employees, as needed, in developing safe work habits. Develops, implements, improves and supports safety procedures and initiatives as required.
+ Ensures that all Pulpmill processes are operated in accordance with all environmental permits. Completes required environmental documentation accurately, and in a timely fashion. Promotes a culture of continually improving environmental practices and performance.
+ Provides process and technical expertise for the bleach plant, ClO2 generating plant and chemical unloading. Provides troubleshooting assistance for other areas of the Pulpmill.
+ Serves as the Operations point person for all ClO2 PSM activities.
+ Assumes departmental and mill call out responsibilities as scheduled. In the absence of the Fiberline Superintendent, provides meeting coverage and assists in directing operations, as needed, according to the call out schedule.
+ Understands basic bleaching chemistry. Possesses a fundamental understanding of the mechanical operation of bleaching and washing equipment.
+ Coordinates bleach plant, ClO2 generator and chemical unloading maintenance activities, including the writing of work orders, preparation of equipment and processes for maintenance work, and assisting with lock-out tag-out as needed. Works with the Maintenance department to ensure that maintenance activities are completed safely, in a timely manner and within budget.
+ Identifies the need for capital projects, and assists with the development of the business case for such projects. Coordinates the planning and implementation of capital projects with the Engineering and Maintenance departments, as well as outside engineering and maintenance resources.
+ Assists with the preparation of annual operating area budgets. Operates area in accordance with the budget. Documents reasons significant variances to the budget.
+ Maintains and improves operational training procedures. Verifies new employees’ competence prior to being placed on the job. Provides written guidance when the process needs to be operated outside of normal parameters for safety or operational reasons.
+ Communicates work place expectations to hourly employees, including adherence to Plant Rules. Applies progressive discipline as needed.
+ Purchases tools, chemicals, and other parts and equipment not available as a standard raw material or through the storeroom.
+ Attends technical seminars and meetings for the purpose of continuing technical training.
+ Evaluates and recommends process improvement projects, and supports related trials.
+ Manages hourly employees in both the Continuous and Batch Digester areas.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily as agreed by incumbent and supervisory manager. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities.
+ Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in Chemical Engineering or Paper Science, and at least five (2) years related experience in pulping or process engineering OR a high school diploma or GED and at least fifteen (15) years combined experience in pulping operations and front line supervision.
+ Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures. Ability to write operational and safety procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, engineers and hourly workers.
+ Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in verbal, mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
