Title Assistant Professor of Religion (Jewish culture) Posting Number F00270JP Department Religion Position Summary Bowdoin College’s Department of Religion invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment in Jewish Culture at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2026. We seek a candidate specializing in post-1600 Jewish culture and welcome a variety of methodological approaches including but not limited to material culture, cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, literature, history, and gender and sexuality studies. Preference will be given to candidates with research-level proficiency in languages other than English.

Bowdoin is particularly interested in candidates dedicated to undergraduate teaching and with a promise of long-term successful research and/or creative work. Successful candidates will be able to teach Introduction to the Study of Religion, Theories About Religion (an advanced theories and methods course), as well as introductory and thematic courses in their area of specialization. The teaching load is two courses per semester. A PhD is required by the date of appointment.
