The Department of Political Science, College of Arts and Sciences, at the University of Rhode Island is recruiting for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Public Administration, Public Affairs, or Public Policy. This is a tenure-track, academic year appointment at the rank of assistant professor to commence in the Fall of 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

We invite applications for a faculty position in Public Administration, Public Affairs, or Public Policy. The successful candidate will contribute to both graduate and undergraduate teaching, research, and service responsibilities within the department and the University.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate-level courses in Public Management or Public Policy that are part of the core requirements for the online Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, as well as courses supporting online graduate certificates. In addition, the candidate will also teach undergraduate political science courses in areas such as Public Administration, Public Management, Public Policy, and other subjects aligned with their area of expertise. Experience with or interest in online instruction is strongly preferred.

Applicants should demonstrate a clear research agenda and the potential to produce original, high-quality scholarship in the fields of Public Administration and/or Public Policy. A record of peer-reviewed publications or evidence of research promise is expected. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research profile that contributes to the discipline.
The faculty member will contribute to the governance and ongoing development of the MPA program, including curriculum planning, Capstone advising, and program assessment. In addition to department-level duties, the candidate will provide service to the University and engage with the broader academic and professional community.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

1) Ph.D., or expectation of completion of degree requirements by appointment date
of September 1, 2026, in Public Administration, Public Affairs, or Public Policy.

2) Specialization in Public Management subfields or a specialized public policy-related field.

3) Demonstrated ability to teach courses in at least two of the following: Seminar in Public Administration and Policy, Ethics in Public Administration and Policy, Public Personnel Management, Public Budgeting and Finance, or other Public Management courses.

4) Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate political science courses in at least one of the following areas: Public Administration, Public Affairs, or Public Policy.

5) Demonstrated ability or potential to effectively deliver high-quality graduate-level online courses, with strong record of effective teaching and student engagement in virtual learning environments.

6) Evidence of research in the field of Public Administration or Public Policy with scholarly work commensurate with level of academic experience.

7) Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations or in diverse environments.

PREFERRED: Preference will be given to candidates who can provide a strong plan for active publication and who can demonstrate a record of, or potential for, excellent teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels:

1) Research expertise in at least one of the following or related areas: ethics in public administration or policy, performance management, representative bureaucracy, leadership, information and technology management, local government management, or specific policy-related fields.

2) Evidence of online instruction or extensive training in online pedagogy.

3) Ability to teach on identity plurality and their intersections in public administration and policy.
