Assistant Portfolio Manager, MLJ Investments

Role Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Investments, Manulife Life Japan (MLJ), this role will be a member of the MLJ General Account Investments, which is responsible for the management and oversight of all MLJ’s General account portfolios, covering a broad range of asset classes including global public and private debt, public and private equities, as well as other alternative investments.

This position is responsible for supporting Head of Investments and MLJ investment team to oversee and develop general account investments strategy for MLJ’s overall portfolios. The incumbent will also work with the team on investment performance monitoring, compliance with regulations and internal investment guidelines, and communication of investment activities and results to MLJ senior management.

The successful incumbent is a strong collaborator who works seamlessly with the MLJ General Account Investments team members as well as MLJ’s business unit relevant people, investment managers, which includes the affiliates and General account portfolio management team, ALM, Risk, and functional teams such as Accounting, Tax, Capital and Legal at MLJ. 

Job Description:

Contribute to the team overseeing and monitoring the investment portfolios/mandates outsourced to different investment managers, implementing tactical asset allocation calls to different mandates to optimize risk-adjusted returns, and ensuring that the overall investment portfolios are in compliance with all applicable segment- and entity-level investment, guidelines and parametersSupport Japan Asset Liability Management Committee, Japan Corporate Finance Committee and Board Committee processes and prepare necessary materials such as investment updatesLiaise with business unit functional areas, such as Product, Actuarial, Finance and Legal to provide integrated investment support, including, but not limited to, capital review, surveillance of and compliance with investment-related regulatory requirementsParticipate in ad-hoc investment initiatives and related projects working with Regional and Corporate teams as required: Coordinate solvency impact quantification, accounting process, recommend asset allocation and source of fund, participate in regional project discussion to support the execution of the agreed strategyManage investment outsourcing arrangements, including review and maintenance of investment management, advisory, and service level agreements, annual due diligences

Skills and Experience (Must Have):

Bachelor’s degree3-5 years of investment experience in the insurance or institutional asset management industryProficient in the use of Microsoft Office application (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc)Fluency in Japanese; ability to speak and write good EnglishDemonstrated self-starter and team player with collaborative mindsetGreat attention to details. Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and ability to manage multiple tasksAbility to work steadfastly, flexibly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment

Skills and Experience (Nice to Have):

Understanding of accounting related to Investment, life insurance products/liabilities and Insurance Business Laws (investment-related parts) and related rules and regulations is plus.

Professional degree preferable (CFA, CPA)

Salary: 

Based on our Work Rules, we will consider your experience, skills and knowledge when we decide the salary. 

Commutation allowance and Variable Incentive Bonus are paid based on our Work Rules. 

Working Hours: 

Standard Working Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm  (Include 1 hour break. Flex-time system available)
