General Statement The MSU Writing Center, through its peer tutor programs and faculty partnerships, provides increased access to educational programming for student writers across Montana State University. The MSU Writing Center’s vision is to create a dynamic, collaborative environment that fosters and maintains a vibrant community of writers across the MSU campuses. The Writing Center serves all MSU students. Writing Center tutors meet individually or in groups with students of all abilities and backgrounds at any stage in their writing processes. In addition to working with the students at MSU, Writing Center staff collaborate with faculty to build partnerships that support the teaching of writing within the disciplines and across the curriculum. At the core of all Writing Center programming are the peer tutors.

The Assistant Director reports to the Writing Center Director and will work closely with the Director and the Academic Program Coordinator in carrying out the vision of the Montana State University Writing Center. The Assistant Director has the primary responsibility of coordinating with and assisting the Director in campus outreach; providing supervision for the peer tutoring staff and contributing to the tutor education program; and playing an active role in developing and implementing Writing Center partnerships. In addition, the Assistant Director will stay current in writing center scholarship and developments in generative AI technologies and will keep abreast of the evolving needs for writing support across campus. The Assistant Director may develop and facilitate instructional workshops and materials for students and faculty across the disciplines, as well as for undergraduate and graduate tutors. Duties and Responsibilities Work with the Director to provide outreach and support to the institution at large:

Stay current in the need for writing support across campus and in writing center scholarship; Represent the Writing Center in University meetings, committees, or task forces when needed; Manage Writing Center outreach and assist with events for the University and community; Track and maintain usage statistics for the Writing Center.


Assist the Director in the ongoing development of the peer tutoring program:

Recruit peer tutors from a variety of disciplines; Coordinate and maintain the schedule of graduate and undergraduate peer tutors; Help supervise tutors at two Writing Center locations and online; help develop, maintain, and update appropriate policies and procedures; Contribute to tutor education by leading workshops, facilitating tutor groups, mentoring and observing individual tutors, and helping orient new tutors; Manage online tutoring resources. Contribute to managing operations at three Writing Center locations.
Assist with meeting faculty requests for Writing Center support:

Build and maintain relationships with faculty and program directors/coordinators across the university; Develop and implement Writing Center workshops and class presentations in collaboration with campus partners; Develop new models of peer tutoring support; Help develop and coordinate course partnerships, as well as writing groups and events for graduate students. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Master’s Degree in TESOL, English, Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, Education, or a closely related field. Knowledge of current writing center theory and practice. Successful experience teaching writing in the classroom Significant successful experience tutoring and/or mentoring tutors in a writing center. Experience managing and supervising others in a productive and efficient environment. Experience facilitating trainings and workshops in an educational setting. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience working with graduate writers, multilingual writers, and writers in STEM fields. Knowledge of current Writing Across the Curriculum or Writing in the Discipline theory and practice. Experience working with generative AI writing technologies in educational settings. Experience working with WC Online software and/or other relevant scheduling software. Experience working with Microsoft Online programs. Experience developing online educational modules. Knowledge of MSU organizational structure, policies and procedures. The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrates superior written and oral communication skills. Willingness to attend conferences and other professional events to stay current in writing center theory and practice.
