Assistant Director of Advancement
Wesleyan University’s Office of Advancement (ADV) builds lifelong relationships with alumni, parents, and friends, and engages them in support of Wesleyan’s educational mission and financial goals. The Advancement team fosters pride in the Wesleyan community and develops support for university initiatives through outreach activities, including development and fundraising, alumni and parent relations, and on-and off-campus events. Wesleyan is currently in the public phase of a $600 million comprehensive fundraising campaign. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President and Campaign Director (AVP), the Assistant Director of Advancement is responsible for managing initiatives related to the planning and execution of Wesleyan’s comprehensive campaign. This role provides a unique opportunity for those with an interest in contributing to a capital campaign while honing their skills across multiple areas of Advancement, including prospect engagement strategy, donor stewardship, and event planning. The Assistant Director of Advancement will work closely with the AVP and members of the Donor Relations and Principal Gifts teams and work cooperatively with a wide variety of colleagues (internal) and external constituents, including University leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni, to execute strategies and work toward overall Advancement goals. Responsibilities include: + Draft and edit a range of written materials such as donor profiles, presentations, event invitations, and correspondence. + Manage small cultivation events with key constituents, including coordinating logistics like space reservations, catering, and guest management. + Conduct alumni research and interviews to support campaign storytelling efforts, including drafting short profiles. + Maintain campaign tracking tools and assist with preparing and refining campaign materials and timelines. + Create and maintain records for newly established gift funds and assist with fund announcement communications. + Synthesize and consolidate multiple sources of briefing materials into one voice for leadership. + Provide operational and administrative functions for the campaign team to ensure fiscal accountability, including budget oversight, financial reporting, and resource coordination. + Manage monthly donor acknowledgement mailings to key segments. + Assist with the execution of Advancement events, which may include occasional evenings and weekends or travel. + Perform other duties as assigned. This is an on-campus position with potential for hybrid in the future. Remote work is only considered for residents of MA, VT, NH, ME, CT, RI, or NY. (Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify). Minimum Qualifications + Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in relationship building, programming, fundraising, customer service, marketing and outreach, organizational support, or other related work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. + Strong written communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, professional materials for a variety of audiences. + Highly organized and efficient, capable of managing multiple projects with competing priorities while maintaining high standards and flexibility. + Demonstrated attention to detail. + Proactive self-starter with demonstrated ability to work productively both independently and collaboratively with teams. + Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills. + Ability to set priorities, support measurable goals, and manage against project timelines. + Demonstrated commitment to working within a diverse environment and interacting collegially with individuals of different backgrounds with varied personalities and work styles. + Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, encompassing the capacity to investigate, interpret, and concisely summarize multifaceted information on individuals or groups. + Ability to learn new technologies such as CRM. + Demonstrated ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy and maintain confidentiality of sensitive matters. + Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). + Must have (or be able to obtain prior to hire) and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must have the ability to be insured under the University’s driving policy. Preferred Qualifications + Experience in nonprofit or similar mission-driven environment. + Experience working with high-level volunteers and donors. + Experience with donor management systems.
