Position Summary The Assistant Director supports the development and implementation of innovative recruitment strategies and effective programs and policies to ensure Portland State University meets enrollment goals.
The Assistant Director works extensively with key constituencies on and off campus to optimize recruitment and enrollment practices. This position will have specific assignments related to student admission needs and outreach, collaboration with high school and community college personnel, as well as university partnerships. The Assistant Director leads and supervises a talented staff responsible for attracting and enrolling students from assigned recruitment territories.
The Assistant Director will represent the University and its academic programs and services to prospective students and their families, college personnel, partner institutions and advisers, and the general public. This position requires evening and weekend work, and will include overnight travel. Availability to work weekends when needed is required. The Assistant Director must have strong written and oral communication skills. The ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and with varying exposure to higher education and institutions with different policies and practices is required. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and four years of related experience in admissions, recruitment, student advising, or closely related field.
Demonstrated experience counseling/advising underrepresented college students through the recruitment and outreach process.
Demonstrated experience in managing Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) or similar formal agreements.
Proven ability to serve as a liaison with campus partners, fostering collaboration and communication across departments.
Experience in mentoring or managing student workers, interns, or professional staff.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal presentation and organizational skills.
Energetic approach and friendly, customer-service orientation.
Demonstrated computer skills including proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite, Slate, Banner (or equivalent).
Demonstrated ability to interact cooperatively and sensitively with individuals from other cultures, ethnic groups, lifestyles and backgrounds.
Ability to critically and logically analyze, synthesizes, interpret and extrapolate admission data, regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols.
Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, pay attention to detail and produce desired results. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree with three years of related experience.
Previous leadership experience in student affairs specifically undergraduate admissions or enrollment services.
Understanding of academic credentials, and credential evaluation processes.

Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be between $65,100 and $70,000 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
