Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The mission of the Career and Professional Development (CPD) is to provide professional guidance and resources to undergraduate and graduate students and alumni for their lifelong career development. Programs and services are designed to educate, counsel, and involve students and alumni in career planning and decision-making, experimental learning, continuing education, and/or employment search activities. To provide these programs and services, the Career Services Center establishes mutually beneficial relationships with students, alumni, employers, faculty, staff, and the community. Position Summary The Assistant Director for Career Development plays a key role in helping students become career-ready and prepared for their next steps after graduation. This position provides career coaching to students in undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as recent graduates, to maximize their career development and readiness, with an increasing focus on proactive programming and scalable career readiness resources and initiatives . In addition to career coaching, this role conducts career development workshops and seminars on topics including self-assessment, resume development, interview preparation, and job search strategies.

This role is ideal for a strategic problem-solver who approaches career development with creativity, innovation, and a consultant mindset, seeking to understand student needs, identify gaps, and develop impactful career initiatives. Someone who is curious, adaptable, and student-centered, with a passion for equipping students with the skills and confidence to navigate their careers.

The Assistant Director works closely with the Associate Director and a team of professionals on all planning and future initiatives. Reports directly to Associate Director for Career Development.

Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Higher Education, Human Resources, Counseling, Business, or a closely related field; or bachelor’s plus equivalent and relevant industry-based experience depending on the length and depth of the experience. At least 1 year of experience in career services, counseling, outplacement, recruiting, HR, higher education environment, or relevant field. Knowledge of career development principles and effective coaching strategies. Ability to design and deliver career programming, workshops, and events that scale support for students to enhance career readiness. Proven record of problem-solving with the ability to assess challenges, propose creative solutions, and innovation skills. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to engage students, campus partners and faculty, the public, and other staff members to accomplish office goals. Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to balance short-term needs and long-term goals. Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and sensitive information. Proficiency with relevant computer programs and database entry and management. Ability to work some evening and/or weekend hours as required. Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications 1-3 years of experience in career services, counseling, outplacement, recruiting, HR, higher education environment, or relevant field. Experience providing one-on-one and group-based career coaching to students at various stages of career development and readiness. Knowledge of leadership, work style, and personality tests and assessments. Knowledge and understanding of employment trends, job market insights, and career development best practices. Experience or working knowledge of career platforms (e.g., Handshake, LinkedIn, Vmock, Big Interview, etc.) and virtual engagement tools for coaching and programming. Experience designing and delivering presentations with the ability to adjust based on audience needs. Percentage Of Time 45% Key Responsibility Career Coaching Essential Tasks Provides individual and group coaching to students and recent graduates through in-person, virtual, and phone-based appointments. Creates and utilizes group coaching techniques to engage student populations at scale. Administers and interprets career assessments (e.g., MBTI, StrengthsQuest, Interest Inventories) as certifications allow. Guides students in developing career strategies, making informed decisions, and navigating job searches, and graduate school applications. Exercises independent judgment in addressing student needs and determining appropriate services, referrals, and next steps. Percentage Of Time 20% Key Responsibility Programming and Event Management Essential Tasks Champions the integration of Spartan Experience by developing learning outcomes and coordinating assessment of programs. Delivers programming for campus wide events, specialized programming to select groups of students, and core workshops. Supports career fairs and other department and division-wide events each year. Collaborates with faculty, student organizations, and campus partners to embed career development into the student experience. Percentage Of Time 15% Key Responsibility Specialized Projects/Other Responsibilities Essential Tasks Long-term priorities for the team include building relationships and support for student organizations, developing faculty/staff resources, and enhancing programming for signature events and static workshops. This role will contribute to advancing one of these priorities. Collects relevant data to inform programming, improve services, and contribute to office-wide reports, trending analysis, reports, and other metrics uses. Represents the department at University events such as orientation and open houses to promote career services to students, families, and stakeholders. Performs other related duties as assigned. Creates and refines career development materials, including guides, handouts, and resources, ensuring they are current and relevant to student needs. Conducts research and stays informed on hiring trends, market insights, and employer expectations to keep career education relevant.
