Assistant Coach Swimming

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Head Coach Swimming the assistant coach will assist with the coaching and administrative duties for the Men's and Women’s Swim team, operating under U Sports operating bylaws, university policies and the philosophy and objectives of the varsity program and athletic unit. The assistant coach will work autonomously in the planning and delivery of practices, as well as being the lead coach for the distance swimming program.  The assistant Coach will also be responsible for certain administrative tasks, related to the men’s and women’s teams as well as in terms of the management of the pool facility.


Primary Responsibilities:

Participate in the development and implementation of policies and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the unit. Work with Head Coach with varsity student athletes on sports specific teams. Liaise with sports leagues and associations as well as clubs provincially, nationally and internationally.Help to organize the structure of training camps, clinics and create team building activities for the program. Implement practice plans. Review and monitor team and individual varsity student-athlete technical and strategic development. Monitor sports specific seasonal plans, including technical, tactical and the strategic components for the team. Participate in the development and implementation of women in sport initiatives.In collaboration with other professionals, assist in the development and implementation of fitness programs for varsity student-athletes that include aerobic, anaerobic, speed, power, and agility training.Administer fitness and skills tests on an individual and group basis. Work with the varsity student-athletes on mental preparation, including stress management, mental rehearsal and visualization techniques. Monitor and support the cognitive and emotional development and recovery/regeneration of varsity student-athletes. Monitor the academic progress of the varsity student-athletes.Implement administrative procedures and processes in support of the team goals and objectives. Compile statistics and produce reports for inclusion in University and external reports. Collaborate with the coaching team on the creation of non-conference and practice schedules, budget and team travel schedule. Participate in the organization of activities and events including coaching clinics/camps, practices, banquets, and award ceremonies.Work with University Advancement on implementing fundraising activities, community outreach and sponsorship programs.Attend meetings. Supervise support staff and oversee the work of employees, including casuals. Assist employees in their training.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Undergraduate degree with minimum three (3) years related experience. NCCP level 201 swimming certification, NLS lifeguard certified and Standard First Aid – C certified. Experience working with university and/or professional athletes is an asset. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Demonstrated ability to build and nurture relationships with varsity student-athletes. Experience interacting with a large team of students in a post-secondary institution or within a sport environment. Demonstrated experience supervising unionized staff.  Experience using Workday and MS Office programs. Bilingual English and French an asset. Will be required to work unconventional hours including split shifts and weekends.
