Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
MSNBC is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assignment Editor to join our dynamic news team. This position plays a crucial role in newsgathering, content coordination, logistic coordination and communication across departments and platforms. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, is an effective communicator, and possesses strong editorial judgment.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Coordinate coverage and logistics of breaking and ongoing news stories across the MSNBC News division
+ Assign appropriate reporters and journalist to support platform needs
+ Oversee logistics to meet the technical, operational, and ENG (Electronic News Gathering) needs of field teams
+ Book camera crews for field teams
+ Collect editorial elements: listening to news conferences, listening to broadcastify, calling police/fire/ems agencies, during weather events check on power outages every 2 hours - writing notes for the DL
+ Break news - be persistent with police/fire/ems to get reportable information
+ Visually verify UGC video as rights and clearances for MSNBC
+ Collect visual elements: clearing video, bringing in video on the grid, requesting video from stations, cutting video and sharing from stations
+ Edit visual elements for programs and digital
+ Share elements with stations, shows, and other internal departments on Slack
+ Communicate with programming on overnight and weekend shifts the stations and affiliate feeds
+ Handle affiliate requests from shows and platforms
+ Highlight strong station and affiliate video in slack
+ Use AI transcription for feeds
+ Maintain slack threads for continuity
+ Routinely check station slack channels and compile lists of stories as they come in
+ Pitch stories and doing your own reporting
+ Travel to breaking news events to lead and coordinate on-site coverage efforts
+ Minimum 3 years editorial production experience at a network, cable or digital outlet
+ Strong editorial instincts and a commitment to accuracy
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
+ Ability to multitask and prioritize under deadline pressure
+ Familiarity with newsroom systems, Slack, and digital tools
+ Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and overnights
+ Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000
