Position reports to: Supervisor, Mechanical
Purpose
To perform specialist welding and fabrication on Smelter equipment in accordance with prescribed technical and safety standards, ensuring high-quality workmanship and maintaining a safe working environment for oneself and others.
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
Demonstrate expert knowledge in pipe construction and development
Fabricate components from complex technical drawings and mark off basic engineering shapesCut, drill, punch, and mechanically join structural steelwork with precisionAssemble and mechanically join sheets, plates, tubes, pipes, and various steel sectionsSelect and set up appropriate welding equipment and techniques based on project specificationsInterpret engineering drawings and welding symbols to determine exact welding requirementsConduct thorough testing and inspection of welds to identify and correct flaws, ensuring only top-quality work proceeds to installationPerform steel cutting using plasma, oxy-acetylene, and other approved cutting methodsExecute complex mechanical installations in accordance with engineering guidelinesAccurately lay out and install piping, equipment, and other mechanical systems as per construction drawings and standardsEnsure all equipment is maintained to a standard that supports safety and operational integrityAdhere to stringent safety protocols and regulations, maintaining a clean and hazard-free work environmentCollaborate effectively with peers, supervisors, and cross-functional teams to meet production and project timelinesPerform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor, adapting to dynamic smelter requirementsQualifications
Minimum of a Grade 12 Certificate andCraft Certificate in Metal Fabrication and weldingExperience
Minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience as a Boilermaker in a heavy industrial environmentPossession of a Craft or Advanced Certificate in Metal Fabrication and WeldingCertified in coded welding (advantageous)Skilled in various welding techniques, including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, and welding symbolsHigh level of precision and care in executing welding tasksCommitted to quality workmanship with rigorous inspection standardsBEHAVIOURAL TRAITS
