Job Summary:

In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values and Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Under the general direction of the Program Manager, provides nursing care to patients in the Antepartum and Postpartum areas and ensures safe staffing levels are maintained by replacing vacancies on the unit at the direction of the Program Coordinator or Clinical Nurse Leader.  Provides maternal and fetal/newborn assessment, patient teaching, counselling, and liaising with support services that will promote maternal and fetal/newborn well being.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Using the nursing process and British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) standards of nursing practice, provides care services such as maternal, fetal/newborn assessment and administration of ordered drugs and therapy.  Creates a therapeutic environment by providing teaching and counselling.

2. Conducts comprehensive nursing assessment of woman and her fetus/newborn on admission and thereafter on a regular basis.

3. Provides care for the home phototherapy newborns and their family. Monitors equipment for the home phototherapy program.

4. May be required to provide care and support to:

a. The chemically dependant woman.
b. The physically challenged woman.
c. The woman undergoing termination of pregnancy.

5. Initiates emergency care for the woman/fetus/newborn in crisis by transferring women/newborns to the Birthing Program, Operating Room or Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery as per protocol.  Obtains immediate assistance from relevant resources, such as Physician / Midwife, Perinatal Clinical Educator, Clinical Nurse Leader or Program Coordinator.

6. Provides patient / family teaching focusing on health promotion and safety regarding the pregnancy, the birth experience, postpartum, newborn care and parenting.

7. Prepares the women and her family for discharge from hospital. Performs car seat challenge tests when required.

8. Provides guidance or work direction to other staff by preceptoring new orientees and nursing students.

9. Participates, by providing input and feedback in the development and revision of departmental and hospital policies in collaboration with the Program Manager, Program Coordinator and Perinatal Clinical Educator.

10. Takes responsibility for personal and professional development and provides a nursing perspective by attending multi-disciplinary / nursing in-services, rounds, conferences and committee meetings.

11. Promotes quality assurance and risk management activities by participating in patient surveys, chart audits and other monitoring activities.

12. Supports research by providing information on research projects and following best practice guidelines.

13. Other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Two years of recent perinatal nursing experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Current CPR/Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
• Breastfeeding update, minimum 6 hours, in the last 2 years.
Skills and Abilities
• Ability to use maternal/fetal/newborn nursing theory and expertise.

• Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Ability to organize work.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

 

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION**
