Animal Care/Working Dog Specialist Coach

Help Shape the Future of Animal Detection Training

Are you passionate about working with detection and protection dogs? Do you have the skills to mentor the next generation of specialist handlers in a professional, structured, and impactful learning environment?

At Pearson TQ, we're looking for an experienced and qualified Animal Care/Working Dog Specialist Coach to join our apprenticeship delivery team. Based on-site at the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR), Melton Mowbray, you’ll deliver apprenticeship training and assessment to learners working with detection and protection dogs — supporting their journey from day one through to completion.

What You’ll Do

Deliver high-quality, engaging apprenticeship training in animal care, detection, and dog handling (primarily face-to-face on-site). Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and assessment to apprentices throughout their learning journey. Observe and assess learners in the workplace, ensuring evidence aligns with apprenticeship standards and awarding body criteria. Use digital tools and platforms to support learning, maintain accurate records, and manage apprentice progress effectively. Collaborate with line managers, training teams, and stakeholders to ensure each learner is supported to succeed. Prepare apprentices for End Point Assessment (EPA), ensuring they're confident, compliant, and ready for the next stage of their careers.

Location Specifics

This is an on-site role based at DATR Camp, Melton Mowbray (GB). There will be occasional travel to nearby delivery or assessment sites as required (travel expenses reimbursed).

What We’re Looking For

Significant hands-on experience with protection and detection dogs, ideally in military, security, or specialist civilian environments. Assessor and/or teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one). Proven experience delivering apprenticeship training and managing learner progression. Confident in using e-learning platforms and technology to engage learners. Strong communication, observation, and coaching skills. A flexible, learner-first mindset and a proactive approach to mentoring. A valid UK driving licence and access to transport for travel when required.

Desirable:

Knowledge of Ofsted, ESFA funding rules, or regulated qualifications frameworks. Experience with Ofsted inspections or internal/external quality assurance. NASDU or other specialist animal care/handling qualifications.
