What You'll Do
As an Analyst – BCG Vantage on our Client Focus path within BCG's Risk & Compliance (R&C) Practice Area (PA), you will work in a growing global team, delivering value to clients via individual expertise and/or institutionalized BCG Vantage assets (products, tools, data, workshops, frameworks, surveys, domain-specific data, and related expertise, etc.). Part of the role is acting in a consulting capacity to case teams and the remainder managing assets, IP, tools and team processes. You will own the Trading benchmark and ensure its accuracy and contribute to its enhancement. You will contribute on cases and proposals by contributing relevant analysis and insights and help case teams create a strong impact for the client. While contributing to client cases, workshops and proposals, occasional travel to serve clients onsite during staffing assignments is expected to understand client requirements, and design / develop solutions.
You will support commercialization efforts for the topic/sector working, in conjunction with business leaders, through contributing analysis and insights to proposals, client workshops and marketing materials. You will also support business development and go-to-market efforts of the Markets & Commodities business, as opportunities arise, contributing research and analysis to marketing efforts.
The R&C PA helps clients to manage key risks strategically, to advance organizational resilience and establish a profound risk culture, by defining and transforming R&C operating models. We cover a diverse set of topics across financial and non-financial risks and assist in enabling clients' strategy through technical enablement with the help of our deep expertise in risk modelling, analytics and digitization. Our commodity risk management and trading risk client work has expanded from utilities and oil and gas producers to metals and mining operations, agribusiness, and other industrials. We also assist merchant traders and banks as well as commodities exchanges, brokers, data providers, and government agencies. Our global team of experienced trading risk consultants helps commodities traders in each of those industries capitalize on market conditions to create value through updated strategies, operating models, portfolios, IT systems, and more. Our approach includes: Developing marketing, sourcing, and trading strategies and business models to manage risks in commodity trading, implementing commodity risk management operating models including governance, organization, business and risk processes, and IT systems, promoting cross-industry expertise, tools, and perspectives to provide enhanced insights and capabilities, transferring knowledge and ownership to clients’ commodity trading and risk management organizations and assessing trading performance through proprietary benchmarking tools.
YOU'RE GOOD AT
Market Research & Analysis: Ability to monitor and interpret trends in global markets, particularly in commodities such as energy, metals, agriculture, or soft commodities.Quantitative Analysis: Proficiency in data modeling, statistical analysis, and forecasting to identify price trends, supply-demand balances, and potential market risks.Financial Analysis: Experience with balance sheets, financial statements, and performance metrics relevant to commodity markets.Data Tools & Platforms: Competency in using Bloomberg, Refinitiv, or similar platforms for data gathering and market monitoring.Programming & Modeling: Working knowledge of Excel (advanced), SQL, and Python/R/Matlab for building models and running simulations.Visualization & Reporting: Ability to create clear dashboards and reports to communicate insights to stakeholders.Supply & Demand Dynamics: Understanding of key drivers for commodity prices, including geopolitical risks, weather, logistics, and policy changes.Trading & Risk Management Basics: Awareness of hedging instruments (futures, options, swaps) and risk metrics relevant to commodity portfolios.Familiarity with the commodity subset they cover (e.g., oil & gas, metals, agriculture).Research & Reporting: Experience producing regular market outlook reports, price forecasts, and strategic insights for clients or internal teamsClient Interaction: Early exposure to presenting insights, supporting pitches, and responding to client queriesCollaboration: Working collaboratively and effectively in a group dynamic often virtual, proficient in agile ways of working able to navigate complexity and ambiguityCommunication: Ability to synthesize complex data into actionable insights for non-technical audiences. Required: Master of Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Financial Mathematics degree. Considered: Economics background if experience in Financial Risk (e.g. in the industry or specialty within their studies)1+ year consulting experience or 2+ years of relevant industry work experience in the Energy or Risk disciplines, especially. market price risks. Functions worked in would be: Market Risk management or Market Analytics in Commodity Markets teams.
