Responsibilities Repair, overhaul, modification, maintenance and servicing of a variety of mobile and stationary refrigerators; HVAC and ventilation equipment. Maintains and repairs, replaces and/or adjusts the more complex problems with more extensive repairs to compressors, thermostats, pressure stats, humistats, relays, switches, evaporators, condensers receivers and automatic control devices. Modifies, fabricates and installs parts; works in accordance with technical manuals and specifications as required. Plans testing procedures, work sequences, determines the proper types and obtains parts, tools end equipment needed, and carries assignment through to completion referring only the most difficult and unusual problems to the supervisor. Work is subject to spot checks during progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and acceptable standards of workmanship. Trains inexperienced personnel by giving on-the-job instructions and assistance. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must have had sufficient training and experience to show their ability to perform the duties of the position. A thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical make-up and operation of the equipment repaired. Uses knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, use of refrigerant tables, how to regulate and determine airflow, and the pressure temperature characteristics, for the different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly, safely and with a minimum of inoperative time. Ability to locate trouble before dismantling, and repair unit to ensure proper functioning after assembly. Knowledge to use prescribed test procedures and equipment such as welding equipment, testing equipment, shop machinery, multimeter, vacuum and pressure gauges, and lear detectors, and hand tools common to the trade. Ability to read and use technical manuals, drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams and schematics. FWS Allowances and Differentials This is a federal wage schedule (FWS) position. All FWS employees are entitled to overtime work for work in excess of 8 hours in a day or in excess of 40 hours in the administrative workweek, whichever provides the greater benefit to the employee. Regular full-time, regular part-time (to include those in a limited tenure appointment category) and regularly scheduled flexible employees are entitled to Sunday premium pay when working Sunday shifts. A FWS employee will be paid a night shift differential of 7.5% for the entire shift when a majority of the employee's regularly scheduled non-overtime hours of work occur between the hours of 1500 and 2400. A FWS employee will be paid a night shift differential of 10% of the scheduled rate if a majority of the employee's regularly scheduled non-overtime hours of work occur between the hours of 2300-0800. Incentives and Bonuses Incentives will not be paid. Foreign Overseas Allowances Foreign overseas allowances, cost of living (COLA), and differentials will not be paid, contingent upon eligibility.
