Summary The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic will function under the Facilities Maintenance Service. Responsibilities The major duties for this position are as follow: The incumbent performs all necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on all HV AC and refrigeration equipment within the Medical Center, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and other duties as assigned. The incumbent works independently under the supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor on assignments that include larger projects with more complex problems and with more technical repairs requiring excellent judgment. Maintains equipment serviceability, structural integrity, and provide the maximum aesthetic environment throughout the Medical Center's facilities serving our patients The incumbent is responsible for assuring that work meets building code requirements applicable to the facility. Adjusts manual and automatic controls. Operates, and maintains the computer based Building Management System (BMS) system. Works with voltage from 24V AC and DC to 480V AC and with 1-phase and 3-phase and installs and services electric motors from 1/6 HP to 100 HP. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The physical effort required of the incumbent usually involves the frequent lifting and moving of parts weighing 50 lbs. or more. Because the systems are usually larger, they must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling is correctly completed. Hoists, ladders and pulleys are used when removing large compressors, condensers, and chillers. The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently done for long periods of time. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
