Neuro-Oncology Research Program

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The ARNP examines and treats patients independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals. Responsibilities include:
Providing proper illness and injury care, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
Prescribing medications and ordering diagnostic tests.
Advising patients on continuing care.
This APRN position is within the Oncology Service Line.
Core Job FunctionsPerform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
Function independently to perform age-appropriate history and physicals.
Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient needs.
Prescribe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.
Implement interventions to support physiologic stability.
Provide care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
Facilitate patient transitions (admission, transfer, discharge).
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and make referrals.
Support staff, patient, and family decision-making through education.
Adhere to University and unit-level policies while safeguarding University assets.
Department-Specific Functions
I. Clinical Role / Research
a. Assessment & Diagnosis
Interview and examine patients, review histories, and evaluate diagnostic results (labs, imaging, etc.).
Formulate medical diagnoses and monitor progress.
Screen patients for clinical trial eligibility.
Collaborate with physicians/Principal Investigators (PIs) regarding diagnoses and trial eligibility.
Assess and manage trial-related and non-trial-related symptoms.
Participate in Phase I/dose escalation studies with PI oversight.
Coordinate with clinic/triage nurse and PI to ensure timely patient follow-up.
b. Planning & Outcomes
Develop plans of care in collaboration with physicians/PIs.
Identify expected outcomes based on assessment and collaboration.
Ensure consent processes comply with FDA, GCP, IRB, and institutional policies.
Educate clinical trial patients about their studies.
Schedule and order required procedures/exams for study participation.
Ensure adherence to study protocols, schedules, and correlative study components.
Prescribe and recommend interventions aligned with expected outcomes.
c. Implementation
Collaborate with research and primary care teams for plan implementation.
Carry out physician/PI/Sub-PI orders per protocol.
Document all assessments, management steps, and outcomes.
Record adverse events according to CTCAE criteria.
Provide patient/family education on disease processes, treatments, outcomes, complications, and discharge planning.
Integrate current knowledge of health care trends and advances into practice.
Support patients and families in coping with illness.
d. Evaluation
Evaluate patient progress and outcomes with collaborating physicians.
Review disease response results and assessment data with PI/Sub-PI.
Transition patients to appropriate providers once trials are completed.
e. Consultation & Collaboration
Consult with physicians on treatment plans.
Maintain communication with research teams regarding clinical trials.
Promote compliance with ethical research standards (informed consent, beneficence, justice, etc.).
Build relationships with referring physicians and ancillary departments.
Educate staff, patients, and families about clinical trials.
Advocate for trial integrity and patient welfare.
Participate in community outreach regarding clinical trial education.
Join interdisciplinary rounds and PI/SDG meetings to provide updates.
Qualifications
Education
Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing.
Certification & Licensing
Florida ARNP license.
Board certification as APRN (ANCC or AANP).
BLS and ACLS certification (current).
CITI certification (within one month of hire).
ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certification (on hire or during orientation).
Experience
Minimum 2 years of relevant advanced practice nursing experience.
Preferred: 2 years of hematology/oncology experience.
Professional Development
AOCNP certification within one year of employment.
Participation in 360° peer review process.
Annual protocol submission to practice site.
Maintenance of national certification.
Contribution to professional publications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes
Exercise sound judgment in critical decision-making.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize under pressure.
Work independently and collaboratively.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Apply for privileges in bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, and Omaya reservoir procedures within three months of hire.
