Adjunct Professor - Foundations of Design

Position Overview: The Division of Communication, Art, and Media offers a robust practical and theoretical education across disciplines including communication, studio art, theatre, visual arts, and experimental media. Located in New York City, the University’s programs emphasize real-world application, professional development, and strong industry connections. The Division of Communication, Art, and Media at the University of Mount Saint Vincent invites applications for an adjunct faculty position to teach two undergraduate 3D courses during the Fall 2025 semester. + ART 117 FOUNDATIONS OF DESIGN I: FORM & ABSTRACTION introduces the discipline of design that underlies all forms of visual expression. This course, in combination with “Foundations of Design II,” examines design as a deliberate process starting with identifying formal elements of design (line, shape, value, space, texture, and gestalt) and how to effectively utilize design principles to organize them. Material exploration will include graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic paint, and collage. Skills acquired in this course have direct applications to anyone working in art and design (illustrators, advertisers, filmmakers, architects, interior designers, fashion designers, interactive designers, etc) to the majority of us who rely on visual communication in our everyday life. Start and End Date: August 25, 2025 to December 16, 2025 Course Schedule: ● ART 117 FOUNDATIONS OF DESIGN I – Wednesdays | 9:35 AM to 12:40 PM | 3 credits ● ART 117 FOUNDATIONS OF DESIGN I – Wednesdays | 12:50 PM to 3:55 PM | 3 credits Requirements + A graduate degree (MFA or MA) in Studio Art, Design, Painting, Drawing, or a closely related field. + A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and student engagement. + Experience in both critical/theoretical and technical/studio aspects of 2D design and visual composition. + Prior teaching experience in foundations-level or introductory design courses in higher education is strongly preferred. + Proficiency in teaching formal design principles (line, shape, value, space, texture, gestalt), and experience with relevant 2D materials such as graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic paint, and collage.
