ADHD Specialist Practitioner

NEW ROLE OPEN FOR OUR CELEBRATING AND INSPIRING CHILDREN WHO DO IT DIFFERENTLY SERVICE

This service is funded by Surrey and Borders NHS Trust and sits within the Mindworks Alliance which provides a variety of support for children, young people, families and professionals across Surrey. 

Our Celebrating team run 5-week support groups in all state infant, primary, junior and secondary schools across the county of Surrey. We are in our 5th year of delivering this service.

We have a dedicated service administrator who liaises with the schools, collects the referrals and coordinates our session times with the support from our Team Manager. Our ADHD Practitioners run multiple groups in schools over the week seeing approximately 90 students each week.

We have a wide range of activities and resources on offer creating our bespoke 5 week programme to cover elements of development and coping strategies which can be more challenging for children and young people who are diagnosed with ADHD or show ADHD behaviours. 

Essential Skills/Experience

A calm and patient personality is essential as we are celebrating the differences our children present with. We celebrate how our children and young people think outside the box and often display passion for a variety of skills or topics. We hold sessions on feelings, coping strategies, friendships, coping with the demands of school work, extending to coping with exams for our older children.  Understanding and empathy for those with neurodivergent conditions and how this can impact their wellbeing and self-esteem, this understanding could be gained through your career or within your personal life.  Being able to think on your feet and adapt delivery to suit the emerging needs or dynamics within your group. Work well as a team, our sessions are always run with 2 ADHD Practitioners.  Decent grasp of IT skills as written recording of our sessions is essential. Laptop and phone provided. Use of MS Packages, training provided for the use of our internal database system is given.  Full UK Driving Licence and access to car. Travel across the whole of Surrey to our schools is essential. Mileage claims made from our Leatherhead office. If you live 5 miles from our Leatherhead office and travel 20 miles to a school you will be able to claim for 15 miles. A strong understanding of safeguarding is essential for this role as you need to be able to proactively safeguard yourself, your colleagues and the students within our sessions and follow the school and Barnardo's safeguarding policies as required.  Confident communication skills, written and verbal in English. 

Desirable Skills/Experience

Experience in working with children between the ages of 6-16, in a paid role, volunteering or within your personal life.  Experience in running group work with children including planning and delivering sessions in a paid or volunteering role.  Professional communication with school staff and other professionals you will interact with whilst running our sessions.  Ability to represent Barnardo's as a charity and uphold our reputation. 

Each week brings something different, we move to new schools every half term providing a different experience for our team regularly.

This role is term time only, working 39 weeks per annum in line with Surrey school term dates. The service is open Tuesday to Thursday and the 21 hours will be worked on those days each week. It is essential that you can commit to being on site at any Surrey school for as early as 8am on those days. Travel to and from our office is your calculated working travel time and travel to schools over this time is non working. For example is you live 5 miles from our Leatherhead office and this takes 10 minutes, one a journey to a school which takes 30 minutes, 20 minutes of this journey is non working time. Mileage claims are also from our office as noted above.
