Additive Manufacturing Weld Technician - AAT
REPORTS TO: Sr Weld Process Engineer Additive Manufacturing - AAT SUPERVISES: N/A Austal USA Advanced Technologies (AT) is a division of Austal USA, a global defense prime contractor and a designer and manufacturer of defense and commercial ships. Austal USA AT works at the forefront to invent, mature, and implement advanced maritime technologies which enhance operational capacities and improve readiness of our defense systems. Austal USA AT operates a technology hub in Charlottesville VA which works to bring cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to scale and also oversees operation of the U.S. Navy's Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM COE) located in Danville, VA. The mission of the AM COE is to operationalize additive manufacturing in the submarine industrial base and provide emergent request support to sustain our Nation's fleet. AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: + Supports additive manufacturing (AM) productively and safely to support Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence. + Operate robotic and automated welding equipment productively and safely to support production. + Ensures that all equipment and tools are operated in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. + Develops Lean Manufacturing processes and push for continuous process improvement. + Develops welding techniques and qualifies procedures for specific applications and implements based upon concurrence with supervisor/manager or delegate. + Validates correct consumables are being used in accordance with the weld procedure. + Visually inspect welds, mark defects, and recommends/perform repairs. + Responsible for first time quality. + Loading/unloading welding cells with parts according to production schedules. + Responsible for welding cell upkeep and all preventative maintenance activities, ensuring they are properly conducted and on schedule. + Ability to perform basic systems troubleshooting. + Troubleshoot technical issues and relay the findings to supervisor/manager. + Performs daily pre-operational checklists basic maintenance of all machines. + Developing standard operating procedures for welding operations. + Monitor and validate lessons learned processes and initiatives to maintain and promote continuous improvement. + Develops Lean Manufacturing processes and push for continuous process improvement. + Adhere to all site and company rules, regulations, PPE requirements, etc. + May be required to work multiple shifts and overtime as directed by management. + Other job duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE: + Associate's degree in Welding or Manufacturing with 2 years of robotic or automated weld operating experience required, OR + High school diploma/GED or comparable trade experience and 4 years of robotic or automated weld operating experience. + Comparable trade experience is defined as 5 or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship. + Experience with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes required. + Experience with programming and electrical systems is required. + Experience operating overhead cranes and forklift. + Experience with Gas Metal Arc Welding - Pulse (GMAW-P) process preferred. + Must have a strong Lean Manufacturing mindset and a continuous drive for process improvement. + Demonstrated the ability read drawings, technical publications and follow weld procedures. + Ability to obtain and maintain required welder/operator qualifications. + Ability to work in a team environment and work as a group to develop best practices and standards. + Ability to receive and carry out written and verbal instructions. + Ability to think critically and solve mechanical and programming problems. + Excellent written and oral communication skills. Specific physical requirements include the following: + Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel. + Perform prolonged standing. + Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. + Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. + Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. + Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. + Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). + Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). + Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. + Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. + Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. + Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel- toes shoes, goggles, respirator, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. + Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. + Able to utilize adequate visual skills. + Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. + Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers. TOOLS: Basic hand tools, sanders, grinders, overhead cranes, forklift, applicable machinery components etc. DIRECTION EXERCISED: Will serve as a mentor to less skilled employees LIAISES WITH: + Departments including but not limited to Operations, Production, Engineering, Program Management, Supply Chain, Quality + Government personnel WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.
