Academic Senior Advisor (Multiple Positions) **POSITION DETAILS** Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens **,** LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. The Student Advising Services team plays a critical role in these efforts by providing proactive, holistic advisement support to new and continuing students throughout their LaGuardia journey. The Senior Academic Advisor reports to the Associate Director for Student Advising Services. The Senior Academic Advisor will: + Provide individualized, developmentally appropriate academic advising to new, continuing, and returning students. + Assist students in selecting appropriate courses each term based on degree requirements, career goals, transfer plans, placement scores, and academic standing. + Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to ensure accurate interpretation of college policies, degree pathways, prerequisites, and course sequencing. + Support students in developing long-term academic plans that align with their educational, career, and transfer goals. + Leverage academic advising tools and technologies such as Navigate, DegreeWorks, and CUNYfirst to meticulously review and maintain accurate tracking of student progress and data. + Monitor student academic progress, identify potential barriers to success, and initiate proactive outreach when students are off-track. + Track progress of students on probation and implement strategies to improve retention and academic performance. + Assiststudentsincontinuallymonitoringand evaluatingtheir educationprogressbyreviewingacademic audits, providing support services referrals and information on college policies + Develop, presentandassessprofessionaldevelopmentandtrainingworkshopsforstudents, faculty,andstaff. + Maybecalledupontoserveoncampuscommitteesasappropriateandmanagepart-timeandsupportstaff in the absence of the Director or Associate Director of Advising. + Eveningandoccasionalweekendsrequired. **QUALIFICATIONS** Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS + Master’s degree in appropriate discipline (e.g., higher education, counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) preferred + Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and/or historically underserved student populations. + Familiarity with Academic Advisement practices and commitment to providing holistic, student-centered support and building positive advisor-student relationships. + Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators + Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills + Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities + Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office 365 and aptitude to learn new systems as needed, such as DegreeWorks, Navigate and PeopleSoft. **CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW** Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population. - Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students - Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses - Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements - Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits - Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines - Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling - Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses - May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed - May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling - May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff - Performs related duties as assigned.
