Maintenance Support Specialist at a glance…
Under the direction of the Senior Maintenance Supervisors, is responsible for assuring that the Processing and Packaging Departments are provided the mechanical maintenance support necessary to operate in a safe manner, at optimum speeds and efficiencies with minimum waste. They will be responsible for Line Technician training as it relates to the mechanical maintenance and operation of all production equipment. They are also responsible for aiding in the installation and start-up of new equipment, as well as the modification/improvement of existing equipment as directed by Project Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Maintenance Supervision. The Production Support Specialist must be knowledgeable of each area’s quality needs to effectively recognize and respond to processing, packaging and equipment operational defects. This person must have a good understanding of the Total Quality Management concept and how to utilize TQ tools in problem solving and continuous improvement initiatives. Candidate must be knowledgeable of hand and shop tools, as well as pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Knows how to use all basic hand and precision machinist tools. The specialist will perform sensitive adjustments involving a definite use of learned skills and judgment which can only be achieved through years of exposure to the equipment and processes. Must perform job with minimal supervision. This individual is subject to working a non-standard work week and call-in at any time.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Troubleshoots and maintains safe and efficient operation of all plant processing, filling and packaging equipment. Provides training to the Line Techs in the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all plant processing, filling and packaging equipment. Provides timely corrective action in emergency repairs on all production equipment. Manages and maintains the predictive and preventive maintenance program as it pertains to their area of expertise. Assists engineering and production in the design and layout of equipment and systems. Designs and builds needed equipment, or modifies existing equipment, in order to maximize line effectiveness, safety and adherence to plant GMP policy. Installs project related equipment as assigned. Initiates and completes work orders and PMs on a timely basis. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Senior Maintenance Supervisor. Qualifications: Has proven previous experience in industrial maintenance/mechanics. Has a thorough knowledge of maintenance principles and practices and the technical skills vital to efficiently resolve mechanical, electrical and instrumentation issues. Able to read and perform basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Has basic digital literacy/computer skills. Strong interpersonal effectiveness across multiple teams and job levels with excellent customer service skills. Lifting Requirements:Rated as moderate, handling 20 – 50 lbs., up to 100 lbs. in certain circumstances. Moderate amounts of working from ladders, on catwalks, inside small access spaces and removing heavy equipment in small areas.
Working Conditions:Exposure to noise levels frequently above 90 decibels (requiring hearing protection) from processing and packaging equipment, and grinding, cutting and hammering activities.
Moderate safety hazards present, as are fumes and dust from welding and grinding. Must occasionally work in small, hot, dirty and noisy areas in a cramped physical position.
Training:Training time for a new candidate is 2-3 years, (to be fully competent). Attends in-plant and external training seminars. Ongoing training will be required to facilitate the application of new technologies.
